an intermittant electrical problem -

I turn the ignition on, and the headlights come on along with the dashboard lights and warning lights - all normal.

But when I go to start the car and the car runs, the headlights go off, the ABS light comes on, the turn signals don't work, and some electrical things will not work. Such as the side view mirrors, defroster, dashboard lights don't work. The door lock unlocks, but won't lock. But the sunroof works. The lights on the center console work.

But sometimes when I go to start the car, everything runs fine and no ABS light.

I checked the battery, and it seems to be well connected. It's pretty new too. All fuses look OK.

i don't know what to check next. COuld a bad ABS unit cause this? I had it fixed about 5 years ago.

I also just had some transmission work done, could they have bumped the ABS unit?

found it! ignition switch. When I wiggle the key, the problems go away.
Now, i wish life's other problems could be solved with a wiggle.

Now to figure out how much one costs, and how to put it in.

There are 2 parts:
1. Ignition Switch to the LEFT of the steering column. This part is electrical in nature.
It is either 0, I, II (running position) or III (cranking position)
This part is $50 or so.

2. The ignition tumbler (on the RIGHT side of the steering column), where you insert the key.
This part is $210 (see link below for info) for a new one.
You need to provide the VIN number so the dealer can match the key.
This is a part that I recommend using a new one because mine failed at 12y/100K.
Don't buy this part on ebay, considering that these cars are 18 to 11 years old (1994-2001), this kind of part on ebay has at least 80-140K miles on it, this is like buying used underwear!
If you plan to keep the car for another 10 years, then $210 for something that lasts another years is cheap: it is $21/year so to speak.

Anyway, all info is below:

i've already ordered the electrical part...fingers crossed that's all it takes. (and a donut is at stake! ;-)

thanks for all the info cn90, i'm using IPD's write-up for the electrical part. i agree about buying the key part brand new, but geez that's still expensive. Volvo parts!

yep! ignition switch. installed the new one today, and problem gone.

turning the key really feels more stiff too, before it was quite sloppy.

thanks for all the help. i think it's the easiest thing I've ever replaced on my Volvo. when my other 850's goes, i may try it blindfolded.

And maybe the cheapest!
Now, go hit a KrispyKreme with the money you saved.
Have a nice, fresh, raised glazed for me... ;)
