I just recently installed a rebuilt steering rack into my 94 850. My parents offered to buy it for me, and obviously I'm not going to say no, and I asked that they not buy the cheapest one they could find. Well, I think they did and it came with inner tie rods already installed. Well, hearing some popping, noticed the outer tie rod boots are torn so I figured I would replace both inners and outers. Bought new inner tie rods and the thread size (diameter) on this steering rack is probably close to an 1/8" larger than OE tie rod threaded section (diameter).

Does anyone know if other steering racks came with larger diameter inner tie rods on different models? The tie rods were the right ones so it's not those. I have no idea how I'm going to replace the inner tie rods, I have no idea what I need to buy.

Thanks for any thoughts. If you have questions, let me know.

Gabe

Look at the fitment it says: TRW Design Rack And Pinion Gear; W/service plate marked 4

I don't know if 850's came with 2 different racks or not. 70 series did. Could be that the rack you got was an smi.

OK, I see the SMI ones on their site now under the S70 section. I guess it's possible the rack I got was for an S70.

Does anyone know the differences between the two racks? Maybe that's my issue.

found old ass thread sort of talking about it. See if someone chimes in.

850s came with both kinds of rack, SMI and TRW.

I'm sure a rack specialist can tell which rack it is by the markings but I can't. When I had the rack in my 850 rebuilt they asked me one question over the phone, something about the shape of the bearing cap, and they knew which rack I had (TRW). I wanted to keep the same style so I could my tie rods over. Where did this rack come from, can you contact them?

Or, remember that thread last week, where everyone was flaming the crap out of someone for buying two different parts expecting to return one?
