Hello all,
I am new to this forum in search of some info on a vehicle I purchased cheap, for repair and re-sale.
The car is a 96 850 base model car, with an obvious head gasket problem. I pulled the head and found the culprit area of failure in the gasket and when looking closer at the block, I noticed there seems to be "ridges" where the sleeves meet the casting around the top of the cylinder sleeves.
My questions before spending and further money to have the head decked.
Is this normal for these engines? Does this engine have wet sleeves and they have moved? Im not sure how hot the engine got when the gasket failed but have not seen any signs of serious damage.
Car had around 170k.
Thanks for any input on this matter!

These do have wet sleeves and they can walk, but it would be more obvious than just a ridge. If the had walked you would see damage to the bores.

Thanks for the response. With that, do you suppose just having the head machined and replacing the gasket typically keep these chambers separated? I.E oil/coolant/combustion.. I am planning on just selling the vehicle, but want the repair legit. I work on Porsche vehicles and know what I can and cant get away with, thought I ask the people more familiar with these engines before re-assembly..
Thanks again
