Thinking about getting an '05 xc90 awd t5 for the wife. Roughly 100k miles. I'm familiar with the pre-98 fwd's, so looking for more info on what I'm getting into...

They never stated it was a T5.

Indeed, 2.5T and T5 are not the same engine. 2.5T means the newer LPT.

lets start with the good:
  • proven power plant
  • proven drivetrain
bad:
  • dem issues
  • angle gear sleeve
  • eats control arms
  • eats balls joints
  • eats inner tie rods
  • eats outer tie rods
  • eats brake rotors
  • probably needs new headlamps...hazing
  • sunroof drain clog
  • touch anything inside the dash and you might set off the SRS service urgent message
  • third row seat might jam and not fold back down

look here for a guide http://xcforums.com/..._1193#entry1193

these are the common problems that may have been addressed already prior to your purchase. dont be scared from my bad list, its just common things that go bad over time.

Look at me, i have the lemon of lemons from the xc90 line up, yet i still love it. still would dump money into it to keep it road worthy.

great info on the other thread, just what I was looking for.

Not knowing much about the awd operation, what's the worst case scenario? replace what and how much? Is it possible to remove the driveshaft going to the rear and operate in fwd mode alone? I might be wrong but think this is possible on the v70 series.

on these cars, no need to remove the driveshaft, the awd is controlled electronically with a pressure switch. so it will stop working on its own LOL.

got it. So assuming the awd system is fubar, whats it gonna take to repair it? I can do all the work myself, so what about a parts only estimate?

invest in a decent scan tool, it WILL be your best friend

autel 702 $200 ish

example: you turn off tracs, and do a burn out in a awd car = awd no workie

scan tool spits out dem 0007 code = $100 pressure switch + $25 fluids + 1 hour (20 minutes when you get good at it) of your time = $$$$ saved over the dealership wanting to sell you a $2000 haldex unit

Or it can need a awd sleeve, $100 part + 8 hours labor for a diy. its nothing for a VS'r, a little dirt under the nails is ok.

My wife has an 05 with 109k on it...up until @ 100k there were no problems. Now its time for cam seals and front crank seal (timing belt etc...now too) the only other problems we've encountered have been:

Rear seat sticking (as steve already listed)
some of the LEDs in the head unit are out.
high beams do not stay on (wife doesn't even know what high beams are  so i leave it)
One ball joint replaced
And now the engine seals (common on all white block 5cyl.)
The climate control vents are prone to breaking as well

Our AWD works fine and we have had no other problems..she put over 40k on it in the last year and a half and has been very reliable..
'98 s70. has over 62 zip-ties
'05 xc/90. The stereo sucks.

RE: high beams wont stay on.

Have you checked the obvious like the headlight switch should be in the vertical position? I'll assume you have since you've had the vehicle for quite some time.

What options/packages were available for the 05s? From what I've read, one is the 3rd row with AC for the back.

Was leather, heated seats standard equipmt? What about xenon?

Yeah I have checked all the obvious..they light up for a couple seconds and then revert back to low. probably the switch is bad..
