Yay, more hand holding for the Volvo newb. So, the XC70 light-out indicator was going on every time I stepped on the brakes, so I figured I would see what was going on back there. When I stepped on the brakes, the top lights weren't lighting up, but I noticed that when I'd close the hatch, they would flicker on in certain positions. So I picked a little further. Found when I jiggled the harness they would come on, but once closed, the hatch wouldn't light up. That included the license plate lights and the hatch area light.

So I pulled apart the interior panels and unplugged the harness and pushed back some of the loom and sure enough, I found a broken, black wire. I stripped the ends, taped them up and reassembled. The lights worked in all the positions, but when I started the car, they didn't work!!! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot>!>!>!?!?!?!

Ignition off, they work, but the license plate lights and hatch light were dim. When the car is started, they don't work at all.

What is going on here?

Okay. Hoping this will help someone, and that I don't appear crazy and/or lonely. I fixed it! Removed the trim panel in the rear and removed the black sheathing. Found another black wire pulled apart. Repaired it and everything works as it is supposed to.

Yay!
