The trans in my 95 855 T5 went boom boom (auto). I have a few questions about the autos that are in different volvos. Locally there aren't to many 850 T5 donors, and im trying to find one with the lowest miles and do an accumulator mod along with a bigger oil cooler.

Will any 850 trans work, N/A or T5?
What about newer ones like from a 98 N/A s70?

IF N/A autos are an option, would they make better donors as they may have had an easier life?

I heard that the newer ones have different ratios, and also that T5 autos are built stronger then NAs. But this is just what i have been told.

I know newer ones do not have the speed sensor in them, but it is possible to tap the ABS sensor to fill in for the job.

If anyone could clear this up for me i would be very appreciative.

Thanks!

i'm not an expert, but i was shopping for a used A/T last month, and it seemed like they were all the exact same (I have a 97, and was only looking at 96-97 A/Ts).

i found one with 118,000 miles for $300. I would recommend due diligence and spend $50 for Carfax reports on the VIN #s on the transmissions. That way, you can make sure to find one that was written off in an accident, not brought in as junk. I also ruled out any from super-hot climates, like one from Arizona. Heat is NOT an A/T's friend.

So far, knock on wood, I seem to have gotten a winner.

N/A and turbo trannys have different ratios. Can't remember off the top of my head though.

Thanks for the tips. I wasn't aware of the ratios difference within the same series.

What about 96+ T5 trans? I seem to be able to find more of those then the 94/95s.

It doesn't mean you can't use an N/A though. I just can't remember what the ratios were but someone that has VADIS going could pull those specs.

Also doesn't have to be from a T5, it can be from any turbo.

Ohh and the torque converter has a different stall RPM from N/A to turbo I beleive.

I thought all 850's got AW50-42LE transmissions which were all the same. The 940 got different transmissions between NA and turbos, but I thought all 850 automatics were the same.

I may be wrong but the ratios an TC stall is different. Shouldn't matter much though.

Also the TCU for the N/A has set points for TC lock-up to be at like 30-40mph and then at 50mph.

The turbo has TC lock-up above 50mph only. Its only te TCU that does this, no mechanical difference internally for lock-up speeds.

The '95 NA had a 1208573 Trans and a 6843110 TC. '95 Turbo had a 1208560 Trans and a 6843635 TC.

Gear ratios are the same, final drive is different, 2.74:1 NA vs 2.54:1 Turbo. Can't find the stall speeds, but the TC part numbers are different.

So if you get an NA transmission, your T5 will accelerate a little faster but cruise a little higher in the RPM range on the highway, I remember my was 3k rpm @ 80 mph so at 80 on this one should be around 3500 rpms

I recently swapped to manual and have the auto from the 1998 t5 that I would sell for $200.00, it has 105,000 miles on it.

I am in silsbee tx, 77656. Shipping would probably be around $125.00

You can contact me at Thunderbirdsc@gmail.com or 409-782-3451

Yes, but in order to have a speedo you are going to have to locate the speed sensor wires in your TCU plug and splice them into your ABS....something like that i need to do it too. Been using GPS so the speedo isnt really something im worried about.

When i said TCU i mean the TCU Harness plug that goes on top of the tranny.

Hmm. Isnt there a speed sensor on the output shaft that had to be re wired to the ABS? from what i kinda remeber it was its own pair of wires seperate from the main TCU harness. I thought the TCU needed to know the speed so it could shift right, or does it have its own signal from some where?
