Sadly the time has come to do the rear engine seal on my 850 and i was wondering what the average cost of that big repair is?

Cost of an RMS? You planning to go to an idy? Shop time on that job is 11-12 hours according to the book. The new seal is ~$30. If you have them do it expect to hand over at least 8-9 benjamins if not more depending on their hourly rate. It's all labor.

Entire engine and tranny must be lowered from below and tranny must be completely removed from vehicle.

If you're DIY requires engine hoist and floor jack. This is the time to also replace your front suspension components since everything down to the rack & pinion assembly must be disassembled to get the tranny out. Not a job for the faint of heart.

engine doesn't have to be lowered. it's about a 9 hour job. most indys charge $100/hour...that's how much I paid (+ tax)

if you're taking out the tranny, would be a good idea to do the three transmission seals too, only $12 parts and very little labor.

have you tried doing a double run of Auto-RX? it's worth a shot.

no i have not done an a/t, but i spoke to my indy mechanic about how to do it, and asked what the transmission shop did. with the correct tools (that the trans shop had, but not my indy), the engine can stay.

Yeah, it stays in the engine bay but get's lowered! Or there would be no way to get the tranny out.

ok, sorry..I know the subframe drops a little bit....it sounded like they were talking about taking the entire engine/tranny out as one unit, and then taking off the tranny, which is another way. and would take 11-12 hours.

I have a bill from an indy (previous owner paid for it) and the cost was around 800 bucks. Glad I don't have to worry about it and I hope you find a mechanic thats honest because thats what it should cost.

I got quoted $850, then did it myself for $30.

good time to get your hands dirty and use the $800 you would pay someone else and pull your engine and trans. do all the seals and o-rings, TB, Water pump etc.....and anything else you might need and still come out ahead..you will be very familiar with your car and if you are planning on keeping it, it will be in top shape for a while..

It may sound like a ton of work but it isn't that bad - scumcity14 is totally on the mark here. Your car will come out of it much much better.

Go through it and see what you think you could do, what you think you might be able to do, and what you think you'll have trouble with. You'll find that it is all doable, and the 800$ you would have spent can be put towards tools for life and materials and you'll still probably have leftovers!
