This is happening on my 98 V70R. It starts no problems but there is this brief grinding noise that can only be described as metallic. Doesn't happen for the rest of the day so only on cold start. Doesn't get very cold here in Vancouver, BC. Any ideas what it might be? Thanks in advance.

could possibly be a loose heatshield or exhaust part, which has contracted when cold, so it's a bit loose and rattles initially...once it warms up and expands, it tightens up and doesn't rattle

do you have a general location of where it's coming from? inside the engine, behind it, side of it?

when you first start the car in the morning, have someone else start it while you have the hood open, and listen for where it's coming from.

Weak starter solenoid is not pulling starter gear away from flywheel quickly. The starter gear is still engaged into the flywheel for a second or 2 after engine start and key release. What you are hearing is the starter gear still engaged. After the engine has warmed the gear slides on the shaft easier and that is why it is only the first cold start in the morning. More than likely if you just take the starter out and lubricate the shaft the starter gear slides on, that will fix the problem. It did on mine. Yes, the starter can be removed without any other disassembly. Is it fun, absolutely not!

SAS pump? Had the same thing on my V70R. Just one of many noises I had to contend with.

Try hitting several spots on your exhaust system to see if you get any noise.

I just got a new exhaust system and had a similar noise.

The problem was a heat shield hitting the right rear spring when the car was first started cold - the extra fuel at low RPMs causes a vibration when the engine first starts.

All very interesting theories, I will look into each of them. My suspicion is that it might be located in the starter, the noise is coming from the area of the engine block.
