I am currently running 18x8 et 40mm OEM pegs on my 1998 v70 xc. I want to go down to 17x8 wheels with 38mm ET.
Looking inside the wheel well with the current setup, the inner wheel/tire seems to be really close to the strut. I feel like moving to a 17" wheel, keeping the same 8" width and offset only 2mm outward more would cause the tires to rub on the strut.
Has anyone fitted this size (17x8 et 38mm, or even 40mm which would put the inner wheel even closer to the strut) on a v70 of this model? Was there a clearance issue?
Team Dynamics pro race 1.2 will be my wheel of choice if this sizing will work out. I want to go to a lighter wheel, and although the 18x8 team dynamics 1.2 pro race is light, the 17x8 is of course even lighter.
Any experienced feedback would be appreciated.

You have it backwards. Et 38 will give you 2mm more clearance to the strut.

That is what I said. 38mm would give me two more mm clearance, and 40mm would be closer to the strut. So if someone had used 40mm with success then I should be ok going with 38mm.
The statement in my OP may have been a bit unclear. Sorry

18x8 is what I am using now, yes.
I need to know about 17x8, as it looks that when I reduce the radius by 1/2" the tire/wheels may contact the strut.

if they are OEM 18" pegs, they should be ET46. so going to a 17x8 ET38 would give 8mm inner clearance, no?

I took a guess at what tire size tire you're running so that may not be accurate but in terms of wheels it seems that you will have the same amount of issues as I do currently. Which is zero.
My setup compared to your proposed one.

I ordered the 17x8 et 38 team dynamics pro race 1.2"S yesterday evening, as well as 235/45/17 tires.
I am running stock XC suspension, and need a little more sidewall to look nice.
Thanks again for the input.
