Car is @ 300,600 miles now. It would smoke once in a while after a long idle or puff on accelleration at long stop lights. In December I had the control arms replaced and while the mechanic had it he instructed one of the helpers to top off the fluids. Well, this thing eating oil and all, the helper filler 'er up. Now it's blowing smoke after warming up and even after short stops ( stop signs ). Here is the my question. I use semi-synthetic and I wasn't asked what oil I had in there. Will a mix of conventional and semi-synthetic cause bad smoking issues? As mentioned in another thread, I have a " massive oil leak at turbo ". I'm also thinking the turbo is just soaked in oil and that may be what's burning off. Thoughts, ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help

well i get a little blue smoke after long idle which i'm almost positive is valve stem seals, if they are totally deteriorated you will see a lot more smoke and at 300k there probably gone.

Valve stem seals

Lower mileage motor on order this week along with another turbo. New mounts, timing kit and will also have the shop replace the valve stem seals while the motor is out of the car. Better than car payments unless I can find an 04+ R wagon for a reasonable price. Saw one semi-local and looked into the dealer that was selling it. Scammers all the way.

Nothing wrong with a road trip out to sunny San Diego.

So, have been on a quest to find a reasonable motor  $1200 for a motor pushing 130 compression. Nutz!
called the two Volvo specialists/yards in my local area. No motors and one even told me to get in line lol.

Anywho, all the small stuff has been ordered so now it's down to finding a suitable motor. Think I may have found one with 170 comp. across the board. This be good yes?

Volvoskiah - shoot me some pics of the car. There's a chance I could talk the boss into letting me splurge.

Its pretty unlikely that this caused any actual problems. The only thing I could think of is if he put in a very light oil (10w-20, 5w-20), it may have increased the amount of oil seeping out. As a temperary solution, you can try using 10W-40 with your next oil change to see if that slows the leaks. But the oil is not what caused your problem. And a different oil won't be the fix.

As people already mentioned, your symptoms about a puff of oily smoke coming off a stop light is typically valve seals, especailly at 300k miles. Now if you have a leak by the turbo, oil droplets can easily hit your downpipe, which causes them to burn off. Valve stem seals will cause gray-blue smoke to come from the exhaust pipe, the oil leak on the turbo will cause smoke to come from under the car/hood and get in to the cabin intake, so you'll smell the burning oil.

Thanks Fudge. Leaking at both points. Bluish out back and I do get the burnt oil smell in the cabin from time to time.
Will a '97 motor work without getting too hairy about replacing electronics?

VOLVOSKIAH - Thanks for the pics

So, while I'm waiting for replacement parts to come in I decided to check the condition of my plugs last night.Found some oil pooled up in the valleys just behind and to the left of the filler neck but none around the PCV hose that wasn't even tightened down. Not enough there to cause any concern as it looks like it may have been a sloppy fill job.
Plugs are two years ( 20k miles ) old and #4 had some oily, sticky goo on the ring.
1 thru 5 left to right
Posted Image

Sorry for the bad pic but had to get the car put back together. #4 with goo.
Posted Image

I didn't see any type of oil or residue in the chamber after pulling the plug.

Getting anxious for all the parts to get in so the work can begin.
