My 01 2.4T Auto tranny finally quit and I plan on replacing the defective engineering with a manual 5spd. I'm hoping someone here has knowledge or experience with this swap as I have questions. Do I need to stick with an 01 tranny or will other years work? If so which ones? And will my current axles work with the manual, or will I need to replace those also?
I know there was a write up on this forum where someone with an 04 C70 did the swap - just wondering how close the 04 C70 matches the 01 V70?
thanks
Sean

From what I understand there are some issues with attempting this swap. One I believe is the software, which may not allow the vehicle to rev past 4000 ? rpm. And then there is the reverse light issue. There are currently discussions on software solutions but none are yet available. The 2001 V70 (P2 platform) is totally different than the 2004 C70 platform, so what applies to the C70 does not generally apply to the 2001 V70. There has been much discussion on Volvo forums about this, do a search if not done so already.

It's possible now, as lucky has come out with a software solution.
The 04 C70 is different software wise but it's the same install mechanically.
Any tranny from 94-2012 should work but there are variations in input shafts and clutch configurations that need to be addressed.
Bottom line, you would be the first to do a P2 swap with the newer software solution. So expect it to do a lot of leg work on your end.

I was aware that Lucky was working on this but didn't know a solution was reached. As with anything new, and as you quoted Please Delete, some unknowns may still lurk.
Roosterize, here is part of a previous post by Lucky:
As it relates to ME7 and manual swap. Unfortunately it's not as easy as M4.x but it can be done.
The main complication comes from the nature of how the CAN bus system works. If the TCU is removed then other modules in the CAN network that rely on TCU data may loose some functionality.
For instance cruise control. As the TCU is controlling the trans it constantly sends out info on the can network, things like trans speed, current gear selection, errors, etc.. if the TCU is removed then it's likely the cruise control won't work as other modules in the system that rely on TCU data are expecting a TCU to be there and it's not... they are unable to carry out their functions without the TCU data they've been programmed to use.
Now programming the ECU to be a manual is no problem, so long as we have the original ECU in hand. The ECU will not be relying on the TCU input so it effectively ignores it and wont' trip the CEL.
Other modules in the network will have codes for missing TCU communication but will not cause the CEL to be lit.
Additional complications: The reverse lights might not work, IIRC the Park/Nuetral switch is connected to the TCU so when you put the car into reverse with a manual trans the message normally sent to the REM to turn on the reverse lights will not be there and they wont come on. Of course you can hardwire the lights, but again this is just an example of the few issues that will need to be addressed.
The cost to develop and recode all the modules on the high speed network is unrealistic and you'd be better off sourcing all the related modules (CEM, ETM, ECU, ABS, IMMO, Keys, ETC...) from a junk yard as some have done.

Thanks for the info guys. Who's Lucky and how can I contact him/her? I've also been discussing this swap with the local independent Volvo tech who seems to think that a simple ECM software download from Volvo for the manual will be sufficient(of course he's never actually done one of these swaps).
Losing cruise control is not a problem, never use it anyway, and wiring the brake lights would be a hassle but do-able. A 4k rev limit would be a problem though.
Wouldn't the most logical and safe choice be a tranny/flywheel/axles/linkage etc. from the same year - 2001? I'm flying blind here and trying to learn as I go.

Sure, you can use the same year stuff but that will not help you. Just limit your search for no reason as like I said 94 and newer trannys bolt up. You just have to figure out the clutch and slave cyl. set-up.
No you can't reload from Volvo, lucky/ARD and his software is the only option, period.
