So I rescently had to take my timing belt off to fix a broken bolt on the camshaft pulley. All that is done and fixed now but I'm trying to put the belt back on. I can't seem to loosen the tensioner enough to get the belt back on. I've tried taking the tensioner off completely to understand it but when I get the belt taut on the crank, idler, cams, and water pump but I can't seem to get over the tensioner. Ive already loostend the tensioner bolt and roated the assembly to the right but to no avail. Is there a trick to it? Thanks

hydraulic or mechanical tensioner?

If it is hydraulic, you need to take the tensioner all the way off, compress it SLOWLY, then pin it. There will be enough slack and you pull the pin when it is all back together. Mechanical I don't really know about, thought it was the same but something I saw posted the other day confused me.

99% sure it's mechanical cus it's a spring in a pulley. Less the hydraulic had that too.

Unbolt it enough so the set tab can move around without being locked onto the block. It won't have many threads left so be carefull. Then you can rotate it counter clockwise and give you the room.

I tried that a couple times and it still wouldn't go on, I even had it on basically like one thread (it even fell off a few times) is there something to that Allen key?

u need to use a 6mm allen wrench to set the indicator in the 'window' .. move all the way right to remove tension iirc.. check this link out:

That does answer some other questions I had but I need help with step one, install the belt. I cant seem to get the tensioner to give me enough slack to slip the belt over it.

A play by play would be nice. Thanks

Then use the water pump as the last install...

Play by play is get the belt on everything and like I said, make sure the metal tab doesn't lock in and is free floating. That will give you a ton of room to get the belt on.

You have the belt completely on every gear? Sitting in all the groves? And your not caught on the 10mm bolt that goes thru the bracket on the right of crank pulley?
