Well, decided to do this to the new one, had it done to my old '95... basically I took the hose off the heatshield on the exhaust mani, capped where it goes to the air filter box, removed the valve in the air filter box and reassembled it. Basically the idea is to make the natural ram air effect of the stock intake more effective. Noticeable improvement at highway speeds.
Like an idiot I forgot to take pics while I did it, but I will get a few shortly of it done.

No sure if they have this on the NA cars, but on my turbo there is a snow guard for the intake tube if looking up from the radiator. You can remove it easily and it will allow more air through.

This mod has been discussed into the ground on some forums, one thing you should know about: if you live somewhere really cold, like in the midwest US or Canadia, then on the highway the throttle plate can get iced up and get sticky. Happens to my NA once or twice each winter.

Na, I don't think that icing will be an issue for me. And yes, I removed the snow shield a long time ago.

Snow shield? My old 850 NA had no snow shield. I shall look at my T5 to see if it has one.

Ya, little bit of plastic screwed into the radiator support over where the air tube goes over radiator.

I would figure on the little shield on the turbo models wouldn't really be for icing, since the air path would have to go through the turbo which warms it up. I would suspect it protects against water splashes and hydro locking more than icing issues.

I think the idea is that, without it, you could theoretically have snow clog the tube and airbox and choke it. It wouldn't get to the turbo unless you had no air filter.

Done it the way you did, of course i just used dowels instead of dremeling and blocking it off.
Then switched over to the turbo box bottom. Much better, and you can grab one for free from a buddy or at a junkyard.
The 99's use a different method for opening and closing the flap right?

I didn't block it off, I took the bottom of the box apart and took the flap out completely and capped the back intake with a rubber cap and band clamp. No dremeling required.

Many car manufacturers run a better setup where coolant is passed though a port on the throttle body to warm it. But it demonstrates how big of an issue TB icing can be. Glad I live in AZ, haha.
