So I've been looking to get into another wagon lately & found this V70R on CL that I'll be looking at this Wednesday. Please give me some opinions/info as I've never had an AWD car before.
*Is there a lot more maintenance compared to the FWD V70's/850's?
*What are the things I should be looking out for most?
*How can you tell if it's a real "R"?

I suggest if you don't need AWD where you live then look for a T5. AWD is heavier, worst in fuel mileage compared to T5, and yes, there are more parts that can possibly go wrong. If you are planning to mod this in the future, lowering an V70R is a bit more complex than lowering a FWD. You can tell if it is a real R by the VIN. Wiki Volvo V70R VIN and you'll know the code to look for. I call BS on the mileage that seller is posting.

those gas mileage numbers are lies, 30mpg? no way.

^^^^like he said, you dont need AWD, dont buy it...sourcing the trans is going to be expensive as hell if it ever goes south.

The kids probably guess, no big deal...

Expect 21-22 city and 23-24 highway.

It has low mileage but keep in mind at 100-140 it seems like everything needs a once over. It's the first round of almost everything depending on how it was cared for. Not a deal breaker but I would definitely get that price down.

dude! what :arob: ?!? these trannys are not hard to find in the least bit AND you can use a FWD tranny but swap the diff and bell housing. Yes AWD can be a pain and I hate it with a passion but you can always run FWD.

I'm pretty sure the R comes with a rear spoiler. Looks more like a cross country with R rims. Photos don't show the badges or the front end which should be an R bumper with fog lamps. Should be R trim inside as well, floor mats, special inlay like stainless, R badges on the doors etc. VIN is your best bet. I had a V70R. Higher mileage is possible on the highway if you do the limit and use cruise control. City mileage is not good. AWD system fails either the drive shaft or the bevel gear plus you've got CV shafts in the rear to take care of. HP turbo leaks oil. You are better off with a T5 unless you can pick this up for under $2K. My 2 cents.

Main thing I'd look out for is the bevel gear and AWD system (driveshaft, viscous coupling). Make sure the bevel has it's fluid changed, make sure the driveshaft front CV is good, and present. They may be getting that high gas mileage if the removed the driveshaft. Good thing is the mileage is pretty low and they aren't asking much, see what CEL it's got.

Transmission on '98 Rs are the same as any AWD or XC from '98-'99. '00R the only one with a different trans.

Not all R came with rear spoilers either, mine didn't. Also it doesn't look like a XC that would have grey trim, on the doors and tops of the bumpers with that doesn't, they did add the XC grill. Also not all R came with the aluminum interior trim, some came with wood.

Also if you are looking to lower the car maybe you should look at the FWD T5 since AWD are not the easiest to lower, it can be done though. Also look at V70R.com for more info and please research before asking... ;)

Spoiler was optional on all of these vehicles. HP turbo leaks oil? umm no, it's just a 16T like any other TD04 turbo they are long lasting units and the only oil issue is the PCV system seeping into it. The CV shafts in the rear are not very common to go bad as they don't get the movement or heat that the fronts get.

I agree the T5 is a much better choice for an all around good vehicle.

Here you go pal, take a look at this one before you decide - http://sacramento.cr...2828378074.html. I'm not digging what appears to be black painted rims but that's an easy fix.

Im not diggin the price on that one, and as for the V70R its missing the R bumper. It could still be an R and the P/O cracked & replaced bumper. Id ask for more pics and interior shots too.

Price is always negotiable :glare: . As for whether it is a real R or not, I suspect that a seller like this wouldn't go out of his way to decorate it as an R and try to pass it off as one. Simple VIN check is all you need.

Thanks for all the replies folks! I will check it out tomorrow. I'm hoping I can get off work early enough to see it in some day light, but if not I guess I'll have to meet her in some bright parking lot lol

Well I got off work early today & checked it out. I think I'm gonna have to pass. I really want something cleaner. Front bumper is cracked, a lot of oxidation/fading (especially on the rear bumper), chipped paint off the door moldings, interior is pretty dirty as well. The steering wheel is very worn looking. Check engine light wasn't on, but the ABS light was. Maybe the battery was dead/disconnected since the car has been sitting for sometime on a driveway under a tree. Tires had really low air pressure & the tags expired last October if I remember right. Maybe if he would've washed it before we met up I would've seen more. Has low miles & pulls pretty good, but the timing belt & rest of the due maintenance has to be done. I'm tempted to give a low offer, but I think I'll end up spending a lot more money on it... For now I'll just be patient & wait for that right one... Looking for any color exterior with a black or gray interior V70 T5. Must be fairly clean overall. Anybody have any leads LMK! :)
