As for ad words... have thought about it but quite honestly I don't think the return is there, at least not now.
You're crazy for thinking that.
Go to google and search for "volvo tuning". Only one ad comes up....Rica, then a bunch of search results. I'd be willing to bet they're paying next to nothing if they're doing CPC (cost per click) since nobody else is advertising with those keywords. Outbid them by a penny and your ad will be right on top of the screen...the very first thing, or set an insanely low bid and at least show up on the screen. Get some ads on the search network and some others on the display network, set different budgets for each one, you can even toy with the keywords for each individual campaign to see what works. Use your competitors names as keywords.. It's legit and it brings in money, business is business.
The best thing I ever did was set up an adwords campaign. Shitty thing is I have numerous competitors, but you don't and that's beneficial to you as far as advertising money goes...I may be around 38 cents a click on average, but I'm always right at the very top of the screen. Most people rarely go past the first page...they look at the top. I'm always toying with my campaigns and you can see your results instantly after making changes. Sure, you may be putting out some money but over the course of a few months you'll be able to maximize your conversions per dollar.
I have a not so great website that's been up for less than a year....most of the time I'm on the first page in the search results and my ad is damn near always at the very top. Does my site deserve to be on page one on the search? Maybe or maybe not, but paying them does have something to do with it.
EVERYBODY uses google...97% of the searches going to my site are google. They're an advertising company and they want your money. In exchange they'll give you exposure anywhere you want it and you can set your own budget.
