At this point they're selling for as much as 996TTs with the same # of miles. Recent ones anyway.... Everyone wants to own the last air-cooled 911.

...Or, as many consider, the last of the true 911s.
The 993 was at the time the benchmark for automotive excellence. It just did not get any better than it in terms of an all around package. Porsche fans the world over were appalled at what Porsche did to the legendary 911 when they introduced the 996, and I personally was not impressed by it at all when I first drove it back in '99. Of course, back then, they were still in their early stages and even the base 996 has come a long way since, but first impressions are hard to undo. Without a doubt, the 996 911 is an amazing car, but it will never be what the 993 once was.

My Porsche is a 1989 944S2, 5-speed, +/- 220 hp with chip and a sport suspension.
I can say without a doubt that the S2 is a much faster, much better handling and much more responsive car than my V70-R. Even though that V70-R has 40 more hp, there is no comparrison between the two, much to my dismay. (I have became a Volvo man for daddy reasons)
I have had my S2 on the track in Kershaw, SC (about 2.5 miles with 14 turns) several times with the local PCA and I have been out there with all types of 911's. All of the 911's made from about 1986 on have my daddy on the track. It is frightening how much faster those newer 911's are, primarily due to thier incredible handling abailites. I hit speeds of about 110 if I took the previous curve well, and they would be on my tail waiting for the signal to pass. Once I gave the signal they were gone - I mean gone - i did not even have to let off the gas for them to pass. I bet some of them were approaching 130-140 on the fast parts of the track - which is fast considering they have to bring it down to 60-70 mph (or less) for the turns (and they have to do this over and over and over).
Regardless of the mods I may make to my V70-R, it will never be able to stand up to a newer 911 on the track. No matter what mods I did to my S2, it would never stand up to a newer 911 either. A well driven 911 is a sight to behold. Indeed, I do not think tha the V70-R would even stand up to the demands of being tracked with the having to undergo serious modifications.
Granted, a V70-R with a great driver pitted against a 911 with a not so great driver is a different situation, but that is not really comparing the cpabilities of the cars.

I totally agree, but I mean did you really expect a Volvo wagon to stand up to a Porsche?

Agree, the R only makes a T5 sportIER
The grandma like porsche driver probably was not giving you his full effort, otherwise you would be very disappointed by the outcome. A few weekends ago I scared the hell out of an Audi S6 that wanted to play with my z06. That driver probably went home looking for the check book to buy a real sports car for weekend plays.

people were pretty much driv'n in a "blockade" with no one going faster than anyone in all three lanes, clogging up the traffic with no where to get by...yet there was like no cars ahead for like 1/4~1/2 mile... finally the outer lane cleared up and i moved over and went wot... this porsche 928 (which version i don't know)...was behind me... followed me too to the outside lane... boy..he chewed me up like a b*tch and went flying by like nobody's business... and i had already downkicked to third and was well into 4k range when he went from behind my a$$ to doing a fly-by....boy... me and my gf were laughing our heads off
so much for our acclaimed highway getaway capabilities

I was surprised and pleased to see that I did not get flamed for my comments about the Porsches.
I admit, however, that I enjoy reading these racing stories even though I was hoping that there were more posts under "Racing" about tracking the Volvos than on street racing.
I have never been involved in a street racce, not even in my Porsche days, perhaps becasue of my age (40 something) and perhaps because I am a pretty aggressive driver to begin with.
I took the V70-R on tis first long trip this weekend and I enjoyed the car very much, however a chip and a suspension upgrade is sounding more and more appealing. I did manage to scare my wife when I passed a car as she was not expecting such acceleration - but then again she never really rode with me in the Porsche as she said it made her carsick (it is a harsh ride), so she never felt its quickness.
One last word about being on the track: There was only one car that I thought blew all the non-race preped Porsches out of the water - a newer Z06 Vette. It is truley an awsome car in the hands of a good driver. My perceptions of Vettes was forever changed from watching that black Z06 in its controled drifts thru the turns and its awsome acceleration down the straights.
