After bonking my head on my 2004 xc90 rear tailgate a few times, I have finally decided to replace the struts (sitting in a box for 4 months). I have done the usual searching, reviewed this forum (and others), and seeing some screenshots of the entire assembly, I still have NO idea how to replace them.
Help, anyone?

I have been meaning to do this for awhile. I actually have an XC here that needs them replaced, just been well lazy. If you do this shoot some images, and email them to me and I will write a review that could save others yours, and soon to be mine, frustration, I will also get you set up with supporting membership.

Strut installed on the xc90. Probably one of the simplest things I've ever had to do (despite spending months looking at the darn things and scratching my head).
Step 1: Support hatch (my technique wasn't the best idea, but it worked.

Step 2: Use a SMALL flathead screwdriver and insert on the "backside" of where it inserts into "ball" (part of the hatch itself). There is a retaining clip that pops back. Once this is removed, then the strut pulls off the ball. It seems to be pressure fit.

Step 3: Do the same for the other end of the strut.

Step 4: I didn't take the clip completely off the new unit, but rather, "lifted" it back with the same flathead, then it magically (well not exactly) popped onto the metal ball.

This took me all of 10 minutes. I was amazed at how simple it was. Keep in mind, this is a XC90, the wagons are a different beast.

Looks good! Upgraded your account. As for wagon tailgates we already have that covered here:
