I notice alot more power 0-60 in "L" (Low gear) but want to know if its bad for the engine or tranny in anyway?

I drive a 02 S60 2.4T with a Spectre air intake 103,000 miles

Its not going to have any more power, its just going to be more responsive. As far as hurting anything, just higher RPM on everything.

Thanks for the responce, one more question do you think it would be possible to add more boost to the turbo?

Yes, with a tune. Later model Volvos don't react well to boost controllers so really the only way to run any higher boost is to get a tune for it. Contact IPD or ARD and they should be able to set you up with something that will definitely give you a little extra oomph!

Would a 02 be considered a later model volvo? And what do you think IPD would do, ECU tune?

there's some grey area as to where "newer model" comes into play, but for S60's, 01+ is considered later model.

I drive my auto in "L-D" all day long(Winter mode locks it in first, shift up to 3 for 2nd, dis-engage winter mode for 3rd, and then up to 3 for 4th.) Not sure if your shift pattern will be the same as mine is a 98. I'm not sure why, but even with an upped rev limit, my trans does not shift fast enough to compensate for the added quickness of the K24 turbo on my car if I'm not shifting. I will sit there and bounce the rev limiter all day long if I just launch the car in "D".

I have literally been shifting my car like this since I owned it (bought 2002) and driven hard every day. Engines go, but the trans lasts. Trans has seen numerous track runs, autocross runs, and like I said is driven hard every day.

Trans has at least 150K on it. On the ODO is 220K and I got it with <70K on the clock. (body has 220K on it)

So if I put it in "w" what will it do? Its a button that I need to press so it wont be that easy to shift and when I put it in L gear its automaticly locked until 60 MPH, then i need to shift to third, so what will "w" do?

W mode will lock the trans in first in "L". So with the car in W, I can do the 1-2 shift (L-3 on the shifter is gears 1-2). Then when you hit the W button again (to turn it off) you will engage 3rd. Then bump up to D for 4th.

So to break it down:
In winter mode:
L = 1st
3 = 2nd.

Out of winter mode:
L = 1-2
3 = 3
d= the rest

Know what I'm sayin?

I been doin it so long, it's fairly second nature to me... I wont even bother going into my downshift pattern. LOL

So basicly your getting More RPM (more power) when using "W" in "L" gear right?

I don't believe he will since the S60 doesn't have the same sport economy winter switch as the s70... It only has a W button which you have to hold down for a few seconds to engage W mode. And then by that time he's better off just driving it normal. Haha

So, is this guy trolling the forum or does he just refuse to do research first?
He's posted 3 topics all with stupid questions.
He's also been told answers and then reasks the same question later.

Everything he has asked can be found either in the owners manual, is general automotive knowledge that can be found anywhere, or is topics that have been gone over umpteen thousand times.

OP - SEARCH - You shouldnt be moding a car if you dont know enough to paruse the owners manual first ...

Im not trolling anyone, this forums seems like a friendly place that knows alot about volvos and as far as the stuipid questions this is my first time owning a volvo, I bought it 5 days ago. I used to own a Subaru wrx hatch 02 and everything was alot more easy to mod and find shops that tune it, my bad if you think im trolling because Im not just seeking some help and this is probably the best website for help.

Ive never asked a question regarding the "L" gear until this thread so how have I asked questions like this before? And thers no need to rage, I have researched all my questions before I post but there is little or no information regarding it, so thats why I ask, if there was info on my question there would be no need to ask..

  • "Thanks for the responce, one more question do you think it would be possible to add more boost to the turbo?"
  • "How can I add more boost to my turbo and what is the max ammount before it becomes unstable?"
  • "So IPD wants to charge me about $750 for me to ship them my ECU and tune it for my 02 s60 2.4T, or have then send me the tuner for $850, Is this really the only way to go?? Is there any other way thats cheaper that wont cost me $800, thank you@"
All from different threads posted in the past few days. All with responses answering your question. All with easily searchable answers with or without the responses.

THIS specific topic is absurd in that your car comes with a nice little book that tells you these things already.

Not to mention the simply lack of general automotive knowledge that your posts indicate.

See now why I thought you were trolling?

I dont want to start off making enemys on this site so my bad you were offended by me asking three questions, thats why there are forums like this to help people out. The manual isnt going to answer questions about ECU tuning, Adding boost etc... Keep in mind I dont know anything about volvos and its my first one that was just recently bought so Im not going to know as much information as you do.
