Hi

Is the S60T5 (phase 1) come with forged pistons? or they are cast pistons?

Just took one of these engines apart, pistons looked cast.

2005 S60 T5 Manual 147K miles;2001 S60 T5 Manual Totalled 9/6/12 at 235K miles
1997 854 T5 212K - son; 1995 854 NA Auto 240K - daughter
Previously:1959 544, 1969 122, 1971 P1800E & 142E
1974 145, 1982 244 Turbo/intercooler, 1996 854 GLT NA totalled
race cars: 1974 142E, 1962 544, 1966 122

my friends also told me it's cast. volvo apply graphite coating to the pistons for better heat transfer.

how about the con rods? also casted?

Depends on the year. I have an '01, and the rods appear to be cast, with machined surface between the rod and the cap. But, in '02, Volvo went to a longer rod, and it is supposed to be sintered metal (metal composite heated to high temperature to bond it together) and it has a "fractured" joint between the rod and cap. Actually made as one piece, the cap is actually fractured at the joint, and the cap only fits the rod one way. But definitely NOT cast, or forged in the sense that we know it.
