For the first time, I changed the oil and filter on my wife's XC90 yesterday. Really no different from oil changes in my 850s just the oil filter. I got the correct Mann filter for the XC90 (including the rubber o-ring) but wondering if I installed it wrong - I inserted the filter first on the oil drain pipe and then installed in the plastic canister and screwed it in all the way. On hindsight, I think I'm supposed to install the filter on the canister first and then screw it into the oil drain pipe.

Should I redo the oil filter? If yes, how much oil will pour out if I just remove the filter without draining all the oil in the pan?

Thanks.

You can just unscrew it and check if it's fitted correctly. You will loose a 1/4 Qt maybe, nothing crazy...

I push the filter into the nozzle in the block, which holds it in place, then screw on the housing, AFTER I've replaced the o-ring on the housing.

Thanks for the replies! I installed the oil filter exactly the way wizzard_al did. So I guess it should be OK.
