Is this type fine to use or or are they dangerous compared to the large standing type?

I used a pair similar to that. No problems. just make sure you get a good bite and lock it in.

When I used those I bought two pairs at Harbor Fright and just used three on each spring.

I thought about that. Mine kept slipping around, they were a bit different though.

An air tool really makes for a quick job.

You can also do it the ghetto way like I did when I installed my ipd springs and decompress the oem ones while they're on the car with a floor jack on the control arm...

I have a set of spring compressors like you pictured. They work very well. Like was already mentioned, make sure the push locks are fully engaged on the spring. No need for any other straps.

Do not use the jack and control arm method. That is a good way to get hurt or damage something.

You can rent spring compressors from your local
auto parts, so do it the right safe way.

I've got the tool too, but if you're not putting the OEM springs back on (why would you? they're so squishy...) then you don't need it.

I have this one from HF. I'm not a fan of the individual sticks.

I think the clamshell is safer and easier to use. One bolt to turn and no slipping. The sticks just scare the shit out of me, even using this I tell anybody else that's in the garage to stay out of the way..I have a lot of respect for a compressed spring.

I knew I'd get flamed for this, but oh well. Jacking up on the control arm, unbolting the top, and slowly letting the jack down is a perfectly fine method of decompressing the spring. It's still sitting on the rubber upper mount and the strut until it's down to where there's no tension left. Zero chance of it hurting anyone or anything. Not to mention you're standing in front of the car using the jack, instead of down by the spring, so... it's kinda safer actually.

I wore out a set of those and bought another I was using them so much. I have done a lot of suspension swaps. :)

Never really had a problem with them.

I'm with the using the vehicles weight to decompress method. Your doing all the motions anyway so why not let it unload itself slowly. Easy peasy...

Just can't do it on 01+ due to the control arm setup.

ill have to look for videos of each method. to bad i dont have anyone around here to just show me next time i need to do this. learning how to do everything from online videos and talking on forums is kind of nerve racking sometimes. but maine is one of those places that just doesnt have people on the forums i guess.

I have had a set of the cheap Harbor Fright ones for years. They have worked great every time. Be sure to lube up the threads and make sure you place them opposite each other, be careful they have a tendency to walking down the coil.
