Hi guys,

Well just last week I have been hearing a strange "whirring" noise on my 00 v70 when braking.

It only happens on low speeds, only when I really hit the brakes, come to a fairly abrupt stop, or braking downhill.
Under normal braking conditions when I coast to a nice stop it doesnt occur.

Any clue to what this could be?
Thanks

I'm going to guess that your rotors have some deep lips on them, and the pad is touching the lip on the rotor. Typically noises of this nature occur only at light pressure braking, and will dissipate if you stand on the pedal. Of course you should inspect all of the brakes to make sure they are wearing evenly and are not undersized. If not you can try removing all the pads and shaving the edges of the pads. This can be done with bench grinder or a hand file.

I would say its ts the rear pads. They have anti vibration shims you can install for this problem. Does it do it all the time? or when the brakes get hot?

little more info..

Well i jacked up the car today and took a look at the brakes. Everything looks fine. So I was kinda perplexed. After i put it back down, i pumped the brakes and put the handbrake up and down a few times before starting the car, and repeated. Drove it all day today and I never could replecate the same sound i was hearing for the past 2 weeks.

Will let you guys know if it comes back, but that was really weird. Maybe it was some metal or something getting between the pads and the rotors?

Did you use volvo oem pads? They switched manufacturers and cause a bunch of problems. My 850 wound make a noise when braking ,, like a whurling noise. Let them wear out installed new pads no more noise
