Both i believe. But there is an easy work-around for the electrical side with a cheap part from radio shack and a solder gun. Theres a guide (SAS delete)

Oh, do you mean that they (smog place) test it, like a readiness monitor?
Then i have no clue...

Boxpin was saying they look into the schematics of the same year/same car as the car which is being tested and look for things like SAS, EGR, etc.

Yeah (the 2nd option), I was wondering if there is more than just a visual inspection - I'm '96 and listed with a readiness exemption. Wondered if a different cpu could be a way forward.

I got it, someone sent me the pic/part #. Was going to post it, but he informed me its in the SAS delete thread.

and the diode was a cake walk. Get those clamps the "bite" into the wire for splicing, and solder some wire on either side of the diode. Clamp them in and boom, you're done. Easier then messing around with solder withe the actual wiring of you car and easy to remove if you should have a reason.

There is a big difference between 95 and 96 when it comes to smog. For a 95 (mine) (pre-OBDII) you can modify your intake but not your exhaust. I had the RIP, sconeman and cold intake installed when I passed by the BAR. But my exhaust had to be replaced or put back to stock, which I did for the test. For a 96+ the intake and exhaust cannot be modified. The OBDII is read during the smog test of which your readiness light will need to be green. When I was tested they came and talked to me, in their hand they had a few pages of photos of the exhaust, it was a picture of the heat shield and components behind it (turbo). I am assuming they had this to verify the components, I did not ask. Keep in mind this was the BAR not the smog shop. I was warned that even though this year my intake mods were acceptable they said that smog laws change and it may not be allowed next time.

The dispute that sent me to the bar was the AFR bung welded into the pipe. They saw that and started shaking heads. When I mentioned that to the BAR they said it was totally ok to have that welded in.

Again, its really going to depend on the smog shop and how much they care.

So this might be too fine a point, and I'm sure it still needs to look stock to the BAR official, but '96 does not need to show sensor readiness with OBDII - it cannot, I believe because it resets every startup.
Here is appendix J from BAR: http://www.bar.ca.go.../appendix_j.pdf
It also lists through '98 not needing to show "ready" - but I don't know. Has it changed again?
I print appx J and hand it to the tester every time, and I pass, with the IPD R.I.P.
Of course, it looks stock otherwise - no exhaust alteration yet.

I have probably posted this a billion times but this is what I had on the car (right) and what I had to put on the car (left) to pass. (notice the matching angled flange that I added at the flex joint to work with the angled housing)

Yeah, I appreciate you documenting your saga, boxpin - it's a good story to follow and learn from.
My approach is to keep it stock until I smog in June, then swap new hardware in. In 2 years, I'll swap the stock back on for another smog test.

It really comes down to who does the smog inspection and how well do they know these cars. So you won't want to smog at the dealer. I've passed sucessfully for two rounds now, which equalls four years. I have a 3 inch down pipe, race cat, 18T, The only thing I've ever had to do was put the stock air box / filter back on with the SAS hose connection. I've also made sure that they see my CARB sticker on the underside of the hood indicating that my MSD coil is legal in California, Just the right amount of credibility so they don't look too hard. Most places, if it sniffs clean with no CELs, your good to go.

Uh oh... 7 CELs, what for?

Btw- Apendix J applies thru '98. The techs will look it up and I'm trying to remember if the smog computer prompted him, but I know I did. (Q-ship may be right about why, I know that I have NEVER seen the monitors set on my code reader! I think this goes with all the ME4x ecus).
