I was at an Auto X event today that a friend runs. On the way up I was running a little late and movin along pretty good when I noticed a 335I on my ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD as I slowed down to about 60mph. He backs off a little and all of a sudden he's right on me again and then tries to pass me. With that, Im in 3rd at 4000rpm and ready! Just as he gets a half car lenght on me, I hammer it! By the time I hit 120mph he was bus lenghts behind! He tried 4 times to pull me, and every time I walked him. The guy never looked over at me once lol.

I didnt run the Volvo at the Auto X as I have a smoked Dela link - bad tie rod - and my HG was off by 2hg?. Anyways, we had some fun in my friends wifes tuned 335i(that she raced also ) His car is a heavily modded SMG E46 M3 but that had rubbing issues and also didnt run.

On the way home I said to him lets do a few pulls as I want to see where my car is being its only at 13-14psi at the moment as Im still using a stock PCV - plus although the tune is safe, its not that aggressive. Sort of a baseline pull test? The M has big cams- headers - no cats -intake- exhaust- "4.10" diff (makes a huge difference I might add) - BBK- Rims - Coilovers ect ect. Its got around 380hp.

So we went for it a few times. The first time I was behind him and basically stayed with him from 60 -130mph. Second he got the jump and pulled a me a lenght. 3rd time I got the jump by a half a lenght and held 2 lenghts till 130mph. So, really it was about even. Oh, and my turbo hose blew right off at 130mph at the last run. That was the reason why my HG was off and felt as if the car was slower than usual on the way up. So I fixed that, and an on the way home she felt strong again plus my HG was back to 21.

Anyways, Im pretty happy that my car at only 13-14psi with a bad seal on the turbo to intercooler hose, and not really dialed in at all, was pretty even with an SMG M3 modded to the breast.

20psi+ - WMI - and tuned - should really make all the difference over the next while as I would say I have another 80HP in the car at least!. Heres a pic of the M3 last year before the BBK at Mosport DDT track (Rain did stop) Amazing car!

Edit.. Another friend of ours has an HPF 600+whp M3 on a stock motor although he wasnt there today. I have to say that seems the E46 M3s are now getting down around 16K-18K give or take -with a Turbo kit or SC kit these cars tick all the boxes for me and they have rear seats for the kids with a big trunk. hmm? lol

Im still on the stock Fuelpump and havent put in a CC yet also. Once thats done soon enough then I'll start running more boost and throw it on the dyno.

The car was put on the road late last year for about a month, and then went in storage again for winter. I have about 5K on the car since the build.

That's sick man! I just test drove a 335i yesterday, may have been modded a little bit more than the one you encountered but nevertheless, mad props. Those 335's with twin turbos pull like a mofo. Straight shit my pants. And I know what you mean about the M3, if I move away from Volvo it'll be into a BMW for this guy.

To me, I would think a lot of people on here would make the logical transition to the BMW turbo-6 platform (as most of our mid-to-late late 90s Volvos) won't last forever) given the factors: turbo, RWD, luxury, etc.

But quite a few people are being held back by the prejudiced "a-hole BMW owner reputation".

I know I can't wait till I can afford one. I drove my cousin's 335i with four ppl in it and it pulled much much harder than my car (I trapped 105+ mph in the 1/4 for comparison), and it was smooth too. I did find the 335 a bit smaller (more congested) compared to our cars.

What do you think Gary? Seems like you've been around the 35's for some time now.

The 335i is a really nice car, and it comes in a sedan. But I wouldnt buy one unless it had a warranty. They run very hot, so you need to change the oil every 5000km at least- they are direct injection and using the best quality fuel and a proper class 4 synthetic oil is a must. Plus a catch can is a great idea. They also have fuel pump issues, but BMW I think have a 10 year warranty on the FPs or 160K. Double check on that?

For me I'll take a turbo E46 M3 lol. 600whp on a stock motor is such a nice thing.
