I came across a small crack in my 18" powder coated Peg this morning.
Is there any way to tell if the crack pictured below is in the finish of the powder coat, or if it's the wheel its self (short of sanding away a small portion the finish to see if it goes through the finish and into the metal).
I'm thinking it's the wheel and I just happened to catch it before the spoke cracked all the way through.

Any advice would be great.

i think it looks like a crack in the coating. it doesnt look like its running all the way to the edge on either side which is normal how ive seen metal crack. you should sand it down cause you will have to do that anyway if you refinish it (if its not cracked through). good luck man! hope its just the paint.

I'd be interested to find out because I read a few different places and saw different pictures where wheels failed due to the high heat used in powder coating. Supposedly it weakens the structure of the wheel. I don't know if that is true, but didn't want to waste a set of Comets to find out.

Sand away - even the worst touch-up will look a lot better on your car than a big smash from hitting a bridge abutment!!!

Yup start sanding away. If its cracked aluminum, just take it to a good wheel repair shop.
