Whirling Noise 1.5K To 2K Rpm - Cold Start

Over the last couple months I have heard a "whirling" noise after start my car up (been sitting for hours and engine is cold). It does not happen until I get to 1.5k to 2k RPMs. No hard shifting but it sounds weird, almost like wind. After the car gets going for 5 to 10 mins of driving (not fully warmed up) it goes away. I dont think it is the hub because it does not always happen when driving. I do have a busted driver's side inside axle.

Any ideas?

You only hear it while driving?

Sounds like it could be your SAS pump. Only works for the first couple of minutes when the engine is cold. The pump can make strange noises.

I will check when I leave work if it makes the noise while my car is in P and started up.

Maybe it's time to oil the wheel and swap out a new hamster from under the hood. ;)

This comes up soooo much, yet we still don't have a set answer. I have it too. :-(

But yea, best guesses are oil pan o-rings or oil thermostat.

I remember someone saying something about the PS pump. Has anyone with these symptoms removed their Serp belt yet?

Ok, I started the car up this morning and started to rev it slowly to 1.5k and to 2k to 2.5 k... sound is there even when the car is in P. It is almost like a groaning/whirling noise. I was not doing anything else besides stepping on the accelerator.

Ive had this happen on my old Plat. Wag and now its happening on my 97 R....I was thinking it was the belt tensioner for the serp, and I remember reading that on here in an older post....

Whirling noise, turbo not getting enough oil on startup? If its rpm related you should hear it slightly at low rpms, and as it increases you would hear it more. Its not present at idle at all? Could def. be the tensioner, when it warms up the fluid inside the bearing actually lubricates.

It is RPM related. It is not present at idle at all.

Not tensioner (I think), since I was scared when I first heard it and did a complete timing belt + water pump change.

tl;dr version - Try replacing the oil pan o-rings and then try oil thermostat.

But it can't be ps or serpentine tensioner if it still does it with no serp belt.
