So my car was in some real bad hail this weekend. Dents all over, I noticed that the molding next to the window has cracked on both sides.

Does any one know how to remove this with out messing it up??

Thanks!

Art that sucks!

Mine is cracked too but the previous owner just glued the pieces back on. So I asked this question. It turns out that molding fits underneath the windshield. You can't replace it without pulling the windshield.

If it's hail damage will insurance cover?

Go and throw a rock through the window and have it fixed. Mine was replaced for $50. including the trim.

Thanks for the reply guys! Sucks that is not replaceable.

Burn E yea the hail damage is bad. Roof has 20 + dings, trunk lid has around 10. Not really sure if I wanna pay my $500 deductible.

I was thinking about cracking the windshield... But still stuck with the $500 deductible. ;-(

Thanks guys!

You don't necessarily have to "pay" anything. Your deductible simply comes out of the amount they pay you. Maybe it's different in IL but here in CA, you file your claim, an adjuster will look at the car, and you can take it to any body shop you choose to get an estimate for repair. The insurance company agrees on a certain amount with you, and writes you a check, Whether you choose to spend the money on repairing the car, or something else entirely is up to you. (However I do think it would be illegal to get a quote from one shop then take it to a cheaper place and get it repaired for less money.) It wouldn't hurt to at least check with a body shop. I'm guessing good shop is going to quote you well over $1000 to fix it, so you'll probably be better off if you do file a claim.

Just call a glass company such as Safelite. Most bodyshops sublet out glass work anyways for windshields or backglass then mark it up 25%. You can usually have Safelite replace a windshield for less than $300 and that may include the reveal mouldings as they are services with the windshield itself.

Not true at all. Any good insurance company will have you bring the car in to their own adjuster so that they can examine and then based on their quote they write you a check. How you spend that check is entirely up to you.

You were right up until the point where you made that statement.

Art, if you have State Farm for insurance I've worked with them several times on car repairs here in the area. Get a hail dent remover to assess the damage for you and then that will help you decide whether it makes sense to file a claim. Given your description of the damage I bet you're looking at more than $500 to repair.

I have much experience in the matters of insurance. I think i had 8 claims in the last year or so.

First on the have it estimated high and take it someplace cheaper for repairs. Yes, sometimes you can do this, but insurance companies know this trick, and it will bite you in the end in 2 ways.
The one time i had this work for me i took the estimate in a Metro area and had the work done at a small town. i think i still broke even after deductible though, so...
1) you will not get as much $$ as you would have by taking it to a good shop. I've almost always had every repair come back with a balance due at pickup that they have to bill insurance for. (as in it was estimated at $1000, so ins pays that, but in the end it cam out to $1500 so the shop will bill insurance for the remaining $500

or
2) you get what you pay for in shop repairs and you car has sub standard work because you tried to make a buck off insurance, and had to take it some place crappy.

Had a large hail storm come through last year and damage my Saff, as well as my 98 S70 T5 SE (which was black)
This is the worst dent in the hood of the T5. it caused me the most trouble.

I took both cars to the repair shop that handled our 08 Matrix getting sand blasted by a gravel truck and rear ended (2 separate incidents about a week apart) They handled the matrix flawlessly. Then they handled said matrix getting totaled, and the matrix's replacement (09 Prius) getting totaled out 8 weeks after purchase as well, Also Prius #2 (an 08 that replaced the 09) was damaged in a hail storm a few months after purchase and they flawless repaired that.

So, the t5 went in and went back about 4 times. first they did PDR on the hood which left a little high spot. it was liveable but then the paint got hazy where the repair was done. so they repainted the hood. then i had orange peel then they repainted again. there was some other issue that they had to re do the hood at least once more, and finally they had to do a hardcore buffing on the entire car because the other spots of pdr got hazy as well (most noticeably after a rain)

Finally they got it correct, and i took my saff in to them. Thankfully by this time they were well aware of how OCD i am about these things, and they had immeaditly called in an expert on the paint. I believe some of it was pdr, and some was paint. the hood on the saff was for sure painted. My only complaint with the repair on the saff was they didn't tell me they were painting it (i had asked to be called, they forgot) and that is only because i would have liked to get some other unrelated spots touched up at the same time as paint on the rest.

They did an excellent job paint matching.

I had a friend in high school that had a metallic gold Chevy S10 that got keyed a few times, and after every repair you could tell the paint didn't match. the truck was only 3 years old, and almost every panel was a slightly different color.
I do not have this issue with my Saff. (i was very afraid i would)

After not having an insurance claim since 2006 (wife rear ended someone while she was 8 months pregnant) I sure did spend a lot of time on the phone with insurance that past year!
(though my Agent/Company did handle everything flawlessly)
