I see alot of 350-400hp t5s on here and some 500hp t5s on youtube... But in reality what does it take to produce 550-600hp out of one of our motors?? Obviously with big rods better pistons and of course ecu managing.. but what really makes it happen? Is it the cyl. Sleeves that hold these motors back from the 600hp range?? Obvioulsy with that much power you might as well have your own tire factory but im just curious as to what gives out in that range...say for ex. H beams, je pistons, head work and all the extra goodies and of course on big ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD turbo but what would stop you from hitting 600bhp??

I didnt know a s s was a "cuss" word on here i dont know where the hypnotoad thing came from but i think you guys get the idea.

For 600hp besides the obvious like a built motor- huge Turbo- Cat cams- custom intake & exhaust mani ect ect. A standalone ECU (Vems- MS ect ) is the game changer for our cars to make the big HP when everything else is in place. Sleeving the block is always an option, but some would disagree its needed for 600hp?

Then of course the new tech is Spray bore technology for blocks like Fords "Plasma Transfer Wire Arc' on the 2013 GT500.

I would sleve for 600 HP. I have seen 2 cracked blocks now from people trying to push over 500 WHP out of their engines.

A 4-banger done up like a really old race car in a tiny little car might be kind of fun. I guess it boils down to horsepower to weight ratio. If the car weighed like only 900 pounds, it might go like hell with a hopped up 4-banger. In anything that's like 3000 pounds, it would drive like a big turd, and even if it does get good mileage, it doesn't seem worth the effort or all that fun to drive if you like having a lot of power.

But I like my hotrod engines to be loud and obnoxious and they should scare people when you start them up, and pin you in your seat when you stomp on it.

Yea but on a nother note once you get traction the amount of power and tourque these motors makes its almost worth it...idk everyone has a sti, srt4, dsms, and of course hondas but no one ever has a well built volvo....i live des moines iowa and im starting to think im the only one into the 850's ive only seen a few but were owned by grandmas and moms and were completely stock... My goal is to have the fastest volvo in iowa.

The thing is, before you try and figure out what it takes, whats your goal, and whats the purpose of the vehicle? You want the fastest volvo in Iowa? at what? quarter mile? track car?

Also because its a FWD sedan, at some point you have to figure that there are better platforms to deliver 600HP effectively?

Uniqueness of it being a Volvo, will be a charm that wears out eventually. Having a car that can effectively put the power to the ground via RWD, or AWD, with proper LSD, etc... will in the end be more rewarding, less costly and overall a better setup for your expectations.

why 600hp? have you been in a 400HP volvo or a 450hp or a 500hp, to determine that just wasn't gonna cut it?

As anyone here will tell you anythign is possible, just need time and money, and at the end of it have a truly unique 600HP FWD volvo sedan that is no longer practical...

But to attain your goals, i'll answer your question (without using my own questions this time):
- Built block (rods, pistons, sleeved, etc...)
- preferably using newer RN head (and block, but this point is debatable)
- Cams
- Custom Intake manifold
- Custom Exhaust manifold
- Big Turbo
- Free flowing intake (with little to no bends)
- Free flowing exhaust (3" or larger), mandrel bends only
- any reliable standalone, VEMS, MS, civinco, etc...
- proper tune for setup
- upgrading suspension and brake components to cope with added power...
- be prepared as its not an easy process, and if you're really looking at spending the time and money to truly get into a 600HP volvo sedan, realize what kind of budget you are starting with, and then realize that for that kind of money there is so much more out there... that isn't "sti, srt4, dsms, and of course hondas" or Volvo...

I completely understand what your saying and no ive never been in a 400hp volvo but i have been a 350 hp.srt4 and i would love to see 450 out of my volvo...fastest meaning 1/4 mile since there isnt any tracks in iowa i dont believe and ive always loved drag racing. And i know what you mean by effectively putting down that kind of power i wouldnt want 600hp but more like 450 and that is my goal for my t5. I was just curious like i said on what it takes for these motors to produce that kind of power...and you pretty much answered my question. And are you guy that had the 20g with stock internals??? If so your build really caught my eye and im kinda thinkin about a 20g for now.

20g is not a 450hp turbo. You need to go larger. Figure 5-6grand, easy.

Get 5-6K together first! None of this means jack until you have the money and are ready to go. Lots of dreamers on VS talking about what they wanna do, but never do. GL with the savings.

A Super 20G will push 450hp maybe not 450whp but certainly 425ish whp.

To make that kind of power is extremely simple just parts cost...

1. Cut Valves on stock head and clean up flow. ($500 max)
2. Port Stock Manifold/Machine lip (Free)
3. Install Super 20G (Water/oil feed lines) $700
4. Make a Front mount Intercooler $300
5. Down Pipe to 3" + exhaust $700
6. Big Injectors from Marren $500
7. Connecting Rods from China $400
8. Haltech E11v2 or Platinum 2000 $1500-2300 (could do megasquirt 3 for like $600)
9. Head gasket kit $300
10. Rod Bearings $300

Total $5,000-$6,000

Then again you are quite a douche so who am I to assume you couldn't pull that off...
