So I finally have reasons to remove both front door panels.
pass window switch stopped working
and the driver door hinge rod keeps falling off.

I am interested in re-wraping the inserts with either suede or leather as I found some I think would work great for it.

The problem is I have no idea what glue to use.
Is there a strong enough spray glue or does someone know what Volvo used when they fixed them.

All the searching I did really just gave me people saying dont do it buy new ones.
Thanks for any help on this subject guys.

I tried it with pleather. its damn near impossible. Fabric might be easier but I doubt it

If I can figure out what glue to use then it might be easier then priviously thought.
Walked around a couple fabric stores for a few hours last night with the wife in search of headliner material and insert material.

Found some nice "fake" leather that actually has some stretch to it, feels almost the same as what we have now, and would take glue fairly well. Not cheap but I would just start with a yard and see if it makes it a couple months before I invested in it for the rears.

Someone local did it and it looks great. but I want to have it sit like it should oem, not sewn together.
He used CF on it though. can get a pic off my camera when I get home if anyone wants to see

You can try it but it wont lay down. It will have creases everywhere and look so bad you will want to kill a baby deer. I have been down this road. :(

Sounds like I need to get a few different materials and try it on a spare panel then.
Maybe grab some adhesive we use here at the shop to hold atm surrounds to the walls of buildings...

Tried it with suede. No go. Unless you had some VERY stretchy fabric and strong glue, you're pretty SOL. I even used the 3M 90 glue.

Best bet is to replace them with non-delaminating inserts or take it to an upholsterer and have them make you a custom R-panel

Hmm.
I wont lie, this stuff was pretty dam stretchy. I may buy a half yard of it and try it on a junkyard panel this weekend.
Like I said above I can get adhesive stronger then whats generally found in stores, and that would no doubt be over kill for this sort of thing.

Someone has to have had some success with this..

If all else fails I will just buy new panels or R panels.
Or mimic what Roberto had someone do with his inserts. <3

I did mine about a month ago. I went to a Joanne's Fabric store (don't know availability on the locations) and got some of the discount fake suede they had on sale. I was contemplating buying headliner glue, but they had Loctite Heavy 300 glue on sale. Here is a link. We have had plenty of hotter days and since i do not have functioning AC they have seen some intense heat parked in direct sunlight. ::knock on wood:: so far so good... The material had very little stretch but i just laid this out ahead of time, and glued about 6 inch sections at a time and worked it into the shape i wanted. The glue got tacky in about 3 min and it was workable for about 15 or so. Then i baked it in the sun outside for about an hr when i was satisfied with the results. I am not an interior craftsman by any stretch and i admit there are a bunch of things i could have done better. Like not get glue on my hands and then touch the fabric front and get glue on it. But it was a learning curve and have been resolute on getting at least one a month done. By the 4th one I should be a pro! Feel free to comment but I will not stand here and say that it is flawless by any stretch. I am sure one day my OCD will kick in and I will re-do it. Probably when i go to install new co-ax speakers to replace the blown components that are in there now.

Yep you just confirmed I am doing this.

Thank you very much. Mattyxxl was actually telling me about the loctite stuff earlier today.

Thanks again and it looks good.

I am speechless. That looks fantastic. But to clarify, was this a fabric or a pleather. I think a fabric is going to do much better then a pleather. The pleather I used did not form well and left creases everywhere.

I +1'd that because I agree.
He did say he used suede so its more then likely going to be a fabric.
Regardless that came out looking good.
So I will try with both.

I think I'm going to do this with mine as well but instead of applying adhesive to the fabric (leather, suede, whathaveyou) I'm thinking about having an upholstery shop sew through the insert in an R panel style. No chance in hell of it ever delaminating.

g00b86...nice job there. looks great.

NO
I can repair holes and chunks and reglue and respray door panels perfectly, but I do not have anyone that can repair original door inserts, it just can't be done, the material has already shrunk, hard and not pliable.

I do have some original Volvo repair inserts in charcoal if someone wants to buy them.
They're also a real PIA to install but they do work.
I have three left. all but the driver's door and will sell them for $30 ea or $75 for all three, (plus shipping).

I'd rather just spend the money and get some custom stitched ones like the R's.
