So I just moved up here for a job located in Tysons Corner. Still looking for a place to live, but hopefully will have that taken care of later this week.

Issue is, i've been spoiled with Florida where i had places to work on my car always, and alot more tools....I feel a little bit helpless up here, since i know i won't have a driveway/garage anymore to work on the car.

So whose up here :P After driving 1000 miles, and finally hopefully having money to maintain the car a bit better, I already have some work in mind. If anyone knows of any good shops in this area lemme know. After driving in this area for the first time last night, i realized i need new brakes ASAP haha!

Anyways, hopefully I'll get to meet some new Volvo people up here! I will hopefully be living in Fairfax if i get the place I am looking at, if anyone is nearby.

Where are you looking to live. NEU and myself along with Brian all live up here. 30 mins away from work on google maps could equal a 1 hour commute each way.

Welcome to NoVa. I'm right next to Tysons, near 123 and 7 and work right across the river in Md.

For shops either contact Volvo5.0 (Jeff) he's near Glen Echo Md. and Autoscandia in Herndon Va, are to of the best indy shops for enthusiast.

And for commutes, test it out during rush hour before you commit to apartment. You might not like the route and all the traffic. Let us know if you need some advice.

So where are you working in Tysons? Brian works there too. I also see a guy with a silver s70 and ABM headlights and Volans wave a couple times and a black xc90 pimped out on .

Hey good to see familiar names live around here!

I'm going to work at MicroStrategy(start first day of work in about 8 hours LOL), which is right across from the mall. I did a quick Google search earlier and it came up with Scandia and viking automotive as nearby...but i would much rather take the car to someone who is on the board.

If you see a red 850R with an exhaust, old school IPD grille, and a Florida Tag....that'll be me. I'm in a hotel right now by dulles, and gonna take the ridiculous 4$ toll road to work, so doubt i'll run into anyone on that road.

The person I'm looking to rent from claims 15 minutes WITH traffic, and it's about 6-7 miles away from the mall. I'm gonna go take a look at the place tomorrow and it's month to month so I can get out of it if it's bad.

I brought some tools up with me, but not enough to do much other than emergencies. If anyone around here ever needs help lemme know, once i get settled in I'll be more then glad to help out!

You'll know my car when you see it (hear it!)... I fly thru Tysons on 123 every AM around 6 and come back on some KILLER back roads to go around the beltway traffic.

So you really are right next to Tysons 1, you'll be going to that food court a lot! I'm about 2 miles from your work. If you can get in and out of work early your commute could be pretty easy depending on where you live. One tip I'd avoid leaving work around 5-6pm. Everyone from every office building hits the road at the exact same time and the traffic is pretty bad, then throw some rain or snow in the mix and you'll have a really BAD time.... <_< Traffic has been good lately cause a lot of folks are taking vacations or working short work weeks. It will start to get heavy again after Labor Day.

Never heard of Viking Auto, but rarely take my car to shops unless I need to... I have been to Autoscandia, they did a good job, but just a warning, they aren't cheap! As you are starting to find nothing in the DC area is, from housing to tolls to labor. Jeffs shop it near Martins Volvo in Bethesda and is a really good guy too. He really knows his performance stuff too, has a very hot s70 T5 with a RN motor w/K24 in it. Also the dealer in the area have some TB guys working there, Don Beyer and Martins. But what ever you do avoid Scandinavian Imports in Rockville, they suck! I think they have someone on SS hyping how good their shop is now. Again AVOID THEM!

About housing and commutes you should talk to Brian (Bdimag) he's living in the Fairfax near Fairlakes Mall and works near Tysons 2.

I have a GTGs at my house every so often sometimes for wrenching days. And my annual cookout/GTG in August, just have to look at my calender and figure out a good weekend to host it. But it's not a rare event to see multiple Volvos parked in front of my house. Had 7 show up for the Caravan up to Carlisle, that I do every year too. We have a good group of members in this area and meet up for lunch or dinners occasionally, last one as at Mad Fox in Falls Church, even had some of the Central Va crew drive up for that... And every Saturday morning I usually show off my Volvo at Cars and Coffee in Great Falls Va, with another guy from SS.

But if you want to meet up sometime soon let me know maybe you can swing by after work for a beer or something and I'm sure Brian and or Dave might swing by too...

I know a shop that does all my work when I cant get to it. (example is that they are installing my two axles this week for $300 just labor) I am giving them the EMPI parts and OEM Axle seals. They are about $100 an hour for labor. Which is pretty good around here. They also give 20% off parts and labor for new customers. PM me if you want their info.

MicroStrategy, that's off International Dr? I work off Greensboro which is also the intersection for Tyson's Galleria...

Where's the place you were looking to rent, and we'll tell you if it's 10-15 minutes

I've basically been in Fairfax/Fair Lakes for the past 2.5 years, with a short period living in McLean off Kirby Rd (which was 5 miles and 10-15min into Tysons)... In Fairfax, 10 miles away, it's anywhere from 20-70 minutes (20 being very rare and usually in the middle of the day), although I just found a new way that is backroads and consistently 30min.

The trick is really to find a place that has other options than the highway, which pretty much means West is better than South... Going south you're kinda forced to take 95 and 495 = hell.

Welcome to the area.

Hey guys,

I ended up taking the place, just because the commute this morning and paying over 6$ in tolls for one way is ridiculous.

I'm over here off of maple lane, and I'm gonna try in the morning going on cedar lane i believe, then ending up on gallows road with pretty much a straight shot to where i need to be...atleast that is what the landlord told me :P

I think i learned that about the highways after today.....avoid them at all cost. It doesn't help that at every turn there is construction either....add that to being new to the area...and then rain in the morning....yea f-dat hah

I definitely like the fairfax part better...i did a little exploring tonight found the walmart and i guess the side of town that seems like your normal non-expensive lifestyle....i knew this because i saw a mcdonalds and wendys LOL

Microstrategy is on towers crescent right across from the mall parking garage. I'm looking forward to eating in the mall everyday, from the size of it, there has to be some good food :P

I'd love to meet up sometime once i get a bit more settled in, and i might have to buy you alot of beers so i can use your driveway :P

seems like a legit spot...

That area isn't that cheap, Jermantown Rd is just kinda ghetto  I think there's actually a trailer park behind the Walmart... But you were pretty close to me last night; if you went like 2 more lights down 29 you'd hit Monument Dr (Wegmans on the corner) -- which would get you to the Government Center, Fairfax Corner (good eats + nice theater), further down is Fair Oaks Mall, then Fair Lakes shopping center... I'm on Monument Dr.

btw re: construction.... just keep telling yourself it will get better :D

Awesome so there is a crowd! haha

Let me know when your thinking of having a meet NEU, i would love to come meet you and the crew!!!

Oh and i got a little lost again last night and ended up by the fair oaks mall i think, near jermantown area....the road construction fubared me and i missed the turn. I really really like that area, and hopefully once i am through this training i can go enjoy myself finally....5 more weeks to go LOL sigh...

And once im done with training/get a paycheck, i'm gonna get some work done. These roads have destroyed my already destroyed strut mounts to destruction :P
