Hi All,

I just purchased a '99 S70 T5 and unfortunately just burned a valve in cylinder #1. The engine has 232k miles on it so I figure it probably makes more sense to replace the engine rather than getting a valve job. My question is can I use any 2.3l HPT B5234T3 motor from 1999-2004 as a direct replacement? I see there are few on eBay from newer S60s and C70s, but their "fitment guide" says they only work for other models of the same year.

Thanks,
Mike

The simple answer is yes, you can use those model year engines. Around 2002 there was an upgrade to stronger internals.

2001 V70 XC, 44,000 miles, Black/Beige, Wifes wheels
2000 S70 ASR N/A, 184,000 miles, Silver/Graphite, Daughters wheels, Xemodex, Rear spoiler,
2000 V70R, 110,000 miles, Emerald(Olive) Green/Graphite, Sons wheels, Father and son project car. 2002 2.4LPT, 19T, Greens. Delco BCS, VDO boost gauge
My wheels: Changes almost daily but usually a Volvo of some sort

Your only concern may be the motor mounts, which changed somewhat over the years for various body styles.

I know where there's a 99 V70R motor with only 40K some odd miles.
However, they know what they have and they want a lot for it!

He should be able to swap over his existing mounts, shouldn't he? Aren't the hard mounting points the same for newer engines? The possible exception being the S40/V50 engines, those are too different to mess with.

Far as I know, yes, just change the mounts. My comment was that if he buys an engine, check which mounts work before trying to drop the engine in.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still trying to figure out what to do. If anyone knows of a decent shop or shade tree mechanic in the San Francisco area that can tackle this job at a reasonable price please let me know.

There is a '99 V70R motor available at a salvage yard 120 miles North of me, but isn't it a different motor/turbo? My friend found it for me and they want $1500 for the motor and $1100 to install it. I don't know how many miles are on it though. Assuming the miles are low enough would it swap over easily? Would I just need to get a custom tune for my ECU?
