I purchased '96 850Turbo

cruise control wasn't working when I drove the car home on the highway. If I pushed the switch to try to activate it, there was no reply from the car.

today for the heck of it I tried it again while on the highway, and lo and behold it worked perfectly, holding the speed I set, and allowing me to slow down only by pushing the buttons, etc.

later today I tried it again, and nothing doing. back to not working again.

any Ideas?

Here is a link to a step by step for a 95-96 Euro spec cruise control.

Must be very similar.

And then check out the schematic for a '98.

should be able to correlate the two.

edit: Sorry, file did not upload. Too big.

Take your foot and press up on the bottom of your brake pedal.

The above is to check your brake pedal sensor (presumably). If it is failing or intermittent, or even just not correctly adjusted, you will not be able to activate cruise control. The car thinks you are riding the brake, and hence will not turn on cruise...

I tried this today.. it seems to have nothing to do with it.

this continues to drive me nuts.
today it worked all morning but by afternoon it stopped working...
I'm wondering what could cause an intermittent problem with the cruise control..?

When the cruise acted this way on my car, there was a vacuum leak. I replaced the line from the firewall to the pump, been working great ever since. If you haven't replaced that line, or at least the rubber elbow right at the pump under the battery tray, I'd start there.

In that pdf that Winterhalo linked, there is a great troubleshoot guide for the vacuum system, pages 9-10. Try it.

Check the vacuum line where it runs under the battery tray. Mine had chafed through at that point on my old 850. A quick splice with some rubber tubing, a bit of re-routing and it was fine for years.
