Hi, My 93 850 recently decided to not start... but on a rare occasion I got it started, drove it to schucks, started it again and went on freeway, stopped at the post office to pick-up mail, then it would not start again. Towed it to the shop.
It cranks, has spark, but no fuel pressure (pinched the schrader valve, only a couple drips of fuel came out); jumpered #15 & #87 on #103 fuel pump relay, but still no start and only couple drops of fuel came out of schrader valve when pushed... previously had code #214 & code #314 from the DTC A2, cleared it and have not seen those codes come back again...
The mechanic said suspect its the fuel pump, and said it would cost over $400 for just the part itself. I went home searched a few volvo forums and found that if its the fuel pump, I dont have to replace the whole fuel pump assembly (~$400), but just the pump (which cost about $80)?
But right now, I do not know if it is just the pump... or if there is something else... please help! Thanks in advance...

If you jumpered the fuel pump relay and still no fuel pressure, then it probably is the pump. When this happened on my '94 850 turbo, I verified by popping off the little fuel pump cover plate in the trunk and checking for voltage at the pump connector (you may need to pull back some of the trunk liner right behind the rear seat to get to this. In my case, with the ign on, I had 12 Vdc at the connector but pump still not running when plugged in (you should be able to hear it run for a few seconds when you turn on the ignition) .
You can get replacement pump cartridges from FCP and others for about $100. I bought mine locally from O'Reilly for $150 because I didn't want to wait. Take care when removing the electrical spade connectors from the pump cartridge. They have little "lock" barbs on them and you need to release these before the spade will come off.
Also... be sure to change your fuel filter if you haven't recently. I have heard this is a major contributor to failed fuel pumps.
