I bought this axle seal for my 1998 C70 automatic:

On the side facing up in the picture it is rubber and looks like it would face out of the trans. On the backside it has a metal face and looks like it would go inwards. But what gets me is that the spring that keeps tension around the axle (silver in the picture) would be on the outside if installed in the way that looks correct (side facing up in the picture being outwards).

Which way does this seal go in the trans? With the spring ring exposed, or with it inside the trans?

There was a cheap aftermarket seal in it before so I have nothing to compare to.

Side facing up in the picture (you can see the spring in that groove) should face inward, not outward. You will see how it's oriented when you pull the old one out.

Remember to lube the seal when installing, no not scratch or mar the surface where the seal sits and use either pvc or a 2x4 block to gently tap the seal in straight without binding.

I've installed plenty of seals before, but this one just looks weird compared to most.
