I'm wiring up an new double din HU to my 98 V70R. I have the Metra harness adapter. I've got 3 wires unmatched after connecting the rest. I've got solid orange, solid navy blue from one connector, and orange/white stripe from the small connector, with no where to go.
The blue with white stripe is labelled for remote output, so that's fine. But where do these other 3 misfits go?

Yes, all colors present that had a place to go, went there. Soldered and shrink wrapped.

Orange with white = car light control switch. Where would that one get connected?

This is the harness I bought; http://www.amazon.co...Car=1&carId=002

update; I just found one of those ebay adapters for adding an aftermarket HU to stock amp in my box o' wires. I'll use that to complete the install, thanks for the help.

Nope, that means you have a Dolby processor. Means you also need

http://www.ebay.com/...=item2573040568

And there is no standard wire colors for audio, So I would look up the pinouts of both the volvo radio and aftermarket radio and make sure you have it hooked up correctly, you cant assume like wires go together. In fact, im 90% sure you hooked them up wrong and might fry something if you were to try it.

And Car light control switch doesnt need to be attached

Thanks for the info.

UPDATE

Hooked up the unit, using the Metra harness and this
http://cgi.ebay.ca/w...#ht_2223wt_1293

Works like a charm, all radio features in action.

BTW a JVC XR810 is what I installed.
http://support.jvc.c...elId=MODL028629
With the sub zero temps 4 months + a year, I couldn't see a touch screen being practical. Interior moisture every morning and all that.

Actually, it means he has an external OEM amp. And the kit he referred to should include a DIN to RCA adapter.
The OEM Dolby surround has nothing to do with this. Dolby may or may not be included with the original stereo.
Not all R's came equipped with it. But that doesn't really matter because virtually no aftermarket HU's support
the OEM center channel speaker anyway, and none would interface with the OEM Dolby module itself.

There's been an EIA/TIA color standard for car audio for more than 25 years.
It's used by every reputable car stereo and harness company on the planet.
Here ya go:
http://www.the12volt...st/request2.asp

Car light control switch doesnt need to be attached

There are two orange leads commonly found in car audio wiring:

Orange - "Illumination" control. This is the variable voltage
supplied by the dash lighting dimmer control.

Orange/White - "Dimmer" signal. This is usually a 12 volt
signal (sometimes a ground) that's tied to the parking lights.
It tells the HU to dim the display when your lights are on.

These two things vary widely from car to car and HU to HU.
Your meter and the new HU's manual should fill in the blanks.

The lighting option doesn't HAVE to be used, but I usually hook it up.
Heck - It's there and you paid for it. Why not?

Thanks for the info.

My manual says orange is indeed light control. Do I tap that into my dimmer? Which wire on the dimmer?

Sorry for so many noob questions, but this is new to me. Believe it or not, it's the first car stereo I've ever installed out of the box.

It looks like your JVC is looking for a solid 12 volts.
Tag it into the parking light output from the headlight switch.

This HU has some programming options for the dimming feature,
but out of the box, it should default to the "auto" mode that responds
to 12 volts coming into the HU's orange/white lead by dimming the display.
Refer to page 33 in the JVC manual for the section on that feature.

On pages 36, read up on setting display colors ( for both night AND day ).
and on page 38, you can find out how to set the day/night color/dim switch
up on a timer! This deck does everything. Someplace, you can probably
make it release the sharks with frickin' lasers coming out of their heads...Nice HU. ;)

HU and sub installed, with Pioneer mono block. Its pretty nice, thanks for the tips. One more ? I get a slight alternator "whiz|" noise through the speakers on acceleration. Am I needing better grounds or something? Amp output and power run down opposite sides of the car, BTW.

Shielded RCA cable, made for automotive. Translucent casing, and the innards looks like they're wrapped in tin foil or something. It runs along the passenger side, tucked under the door/floor trim.

i suspect POS JVC head, if the noise is coming from door speakers, try running another ground to the radio, new separate ground. touch it to different places on the radio. take off the rca going to the subs and see if the noise goes away. if it does then you need to a: replace the RCA b:amp has open ground loop(defective amp) c:bad ground on amp(need clean metal to metal contact) d:plug back in RCA to head unit and touch ground to the rca shields and see if it goes away.

report back with your findings

Opened the RCA cable near the amp, grounded the shield, problem solved. Thanks for the advice! :pizza:
