Kittens have to die in order for Mike to get angry enough to post another rant about why guns should be illegal.

Mike, here's something you'll appreciate:

Is it terrorism or just street violence?

So two young Muslim kids living in America self radicalize, set off a bomb and it's terrorism and the media goes non-stop for weeks on end

One or two young men are disaffected by their lives and shoot up a high school, an elementary school, or a theater and it's mental illness or bullying that gets a week or two of coverage

A young Mexican or Black kid is disaffected with his life, shoots up a street party and it's gang violence or street violence - it gets mentioned below the fold if at all

In one of the comments, the suggestion was made that:

Bombings = Terrorism

Gun Crimes = Freedom

Brown People = Terrorists

Black People = Gang bangers

White People = Lone Wolves

Thoughts?

Then there was this gem that opens up all kinds of possible discussions:

West Virginia is the 2nd poorest state in the union after Mississippi. West Virginia is 93% white. West Virginia has a crime rate below the national average. Maine is 98% white, poorer than the average, and below the national crime rate.

You can examine all the statistics and you will come to the same inevitable conclusion: the greatest indicator of the crime rate in the United States is not the level of poverty, but the amount of black people.

I might suggest that what the commenter there is missing is the fact that it's not just poverty but also densely populated urban settings that lead to turf wars and gang affiliation and greater visibility of wealth disparities.

This one was was an interesting turn of phrase as well:

If you see "Paradise" in flames, its going to get more attention than "Hell" on fire. The fire in Paradise is small enough you think maybe you can find a way to put it out. The fire in Hell is too big to imagine.

Just to add fuel to the fire, the New Yorker had an interesting take on how might we have reacted differently IF the Tsarnaev brothers had used "assault weapons" instead of pressure cooker bombs.

Maybe your problem is Mike that we haven't had enough Muslims pulling out AR-15s and shooting up large groups of people yet...in the US. Maybe that would get the change you're looking for. ;)
