Thanks for your response. I can appreciate the difficulty of trying to explain something with words alone. I am aware of the free oil changes but unhappily that isn't until 7,500 miles. My statement that the car is "due" for an oil change was misleading. It's about a year old and has less than 1,000 miles on it. It's driven very little and then only for short trips around town. I don't want the car to endure four or five years of this kind of use without changing the oil. I've always worked on my cars.....everything from Corvettes to Peugeots. I've seen a lot of parts that were mighty hard to get to but an oil filter that's completely hidden from view is a new one on me.

The red arrows are 10mm bolts. Take the front air intake off first, then the 10mm thats below the yellow arrow that is where you put the oil in. The air intake twists about 30 degrees to come off, then the bigger piece of plastic is a booger to unsnap from the air box.
Not the open and bay13 sign reflecting on the car.

Thanks again, Rich. I appreciate the help. It doesn't look like it's going to be much fun....at least the first time I go at it. As with most things, it should get easier after I've done it a few times.

Thanks. I already have that. Is the torque setting for the drain plug 26 ft-lbs? I thought I read that somewhere but my recollection may be faulty. If not, what is correct? Is there any hope of ever getting a Haynes or Chilton type manual for these cars?

NOPE. Volvo has put their manuals on DVD and have priced them for dealers and service teachs. There are used versions running around on eBay. The manual is called VADIS or Volvo Aftersales Diagnostic Information System.
The used ebay versions run from $20 US - $100 US depending upon what version you buy. The Volvo prcing runs several thousand dollars US for a 1 year subscription. You can also buy a 3 day or 30 day subscription for substantially less and download some of the info.
If you decide to purchase from eBay, make sure the seller has the installation instructions, the administrator password and logon id.
Good luck,
Eric
