Dougy's Sonic Blue 850

Excellent progress made...

Cant wait to hear your driving impressions once this project is up and running...

Your transmission might be ok, its torque that kills transmissions, and typically as you move up in turbo size your overall torque curve might be better with the larger turbo, but the turbo peaks with the smaller turbo will be greater... that was at least my experience on my previous 850 Platinum, I went from:

15G auto (stock)

Tune

19T and supporting mods, and the auto eventually started slipping

Swapped to manual, and kept it as a 19T for another year, but eventually moved up to a 20g again with a ton of supporting mods, and noticed that the torque wasn't as abrupt and severe as it had been with the 19T, might have been even less peak torque value, as I was running less boost with the 20g than I was with the 19T. I couldnt get the 20G to effectively run anything greater than 20psi on my setup, yet I recall my tune for the 19T was setup for 21-22psi, which I believe yielded a higher peak torque value, but was no where capable of sustaining the same area under the curve...

Moved up again to a Garrett 57trim stage 3, with more supporting mods, big boy intake, etc... and again it seemed that the torque smoothed out even more with the larger turbo, and I'm sure the intake changed the engine dynamics as well...

So if your current 320WHP out of a 19T (what was torque by the way???) setup hasn't killed your trans I suspect the new bigger turbo will be easier on your engine and trans...

That's just my theory...

Thank you  Platinum.... your theory is logically sound and am hoping the auto will hold up...torque was 350 to wheels.

out with the newer p2 style of pvc pipping thats good for about 350 hp and in with the simple 16mm hose setup trhats good for about 450hp.

is it just me or anyone can do their pvc system without removing the intake manifold???...lmao

Lol, your plenum definitely makes that job easier. Nice attention to detail on the build, cool to see this much power going in an auto car. Have you considered doing an accumulator mod like the rwd guys do on the aw-70s? Faster shfits, etc. iirc supposed to helps trans stay cooler by limiting bypass of fluid in shifts.

Which pipe is to be replaced with 16mm hose? PCV box to intake PTC unit, or PCV box to head, or both?

thanks Adam...no i have not, but good to know for the future ...i haven't had any issues with any of my 4 volvo auto trannys.

the original one Andzey ...hose coming from breather box to intake pipe breather valve...basically it's setup as it came in 1995 but larger ID hose that the original...the one that i had on it is from p2/s60r which had coolant pipe ruining through it , which i converted to air/vacuum.

this might help you see

Looks awesome!

I got almost a year out of my old black 855t's transmission with a t3/t04e 57 trim at 20ish pounds of boost before trans grenaded... Car was a dog down low, but once you were into the power band it was very fun. I'm sure some better tuning and a higher stall would have done wonders for the car.

My theoretical crap shoot morning coffee thinking on turbo size and trans abuse is that the torque falls off so rapidly on the TD04HL turbos after the peak that by the time you reach the shift point it is a lot easier on the clutch packs during shifts. Whereas bigger turbos that have a lot more torque up in the band are rougher on the clutch packs.

One other cool note is my 855t went from 5100rpm shift points with a ported 15g to 6100rpm with the bigger turbo... That was neat ;)

Looking forward to seeing what you think of it once it's driving!

thanks erick... what do you think would be appropriate intake/exhaust timing setting for this gt3071r turbo?

I might advance both a little to help with off boost response and possibly spool time...

thanks, what if both cams are na?

I'd still advance them a couple of degrees, maybe intake +2 and exhaust +4... It's easy enough to adjust from there, honestly it's a good exercise to try some different settings to see what works best for you and your setup/tuning.

I'm also not entirely sure if advancing intake cam also advances ignition timing, but I like to think it does :)
