Best wagon ever if the damn airbox would stop vibrating and it didn't have a Ford Escort headliner.

A friend in grad school once backed his old rabbit out of his driveway, and all the CV balls fell out.

This grinding noise persisted and got worse. It would mostly do it accelerating from a stop with some torque on the engine. Then it got so bad that it would actually do it while I was stopped. That was worrisome, but at least it ruled out driveshaft stuff! The noise was distinctly metal on metal and could be felt through the wheel and floor.
Had my mechanic listen to it and the first thing he said was lower engine mount. Took a look at it, and sure enough that sucker was shot. You could actually see the engine was sitting too low!
One good way to diagnose this is to grab your oil cap and see if you can move the engine side to side. If it doesn't budge, it tells you that the engine isn't being supported by the rubber of the engine mount. It should have some give to it.

Don't end the thread yet! I've got a '98 V70 T5 and get the same situation when turning left and giving it some power. I shook the engine and it seemed to wiggle a bit. So I'd say the mount is good (maybe?). Did this happen to you only when turning left?
