I bought a new antenna mast for my '97 850 GLT sedan on the net. It came with a plastic sleeve that I can't figure out how to attach. If I don't use it, the mast wobbles when fully extended. However, it doesn't appear to fit onto the mast base, nor into the opening to the motor assembly. Am I supposed to force the sleeve onto the lower section of the mast, force it into the motor assembly, disassemble the motor and insert it there, or what?

This seems to be a popular replacement part, but it doesn't look like the OEM mast.

Thank you.
PS: This is the mast I bought. The folks at autopartsworld can't seem to answer my question.

Any ideas on how to use that plastic sleeve yet?

Thanks.

You can't use that, the volvo antenna has a metal one that is part of grounding for the antenna.

true, I just bought an OEM mast for 40whatever dollars and it didn't have that plastic thang. Take her back and pick up a Volvo mast, or a mast off eBay that says it'll work on our cars.

Thanks. I was afraid of that answer, but wanted to make sure before going with a different one. This part is sold on many sites as an OEM replacement for Volvo antenna masts. It might be good if Bay 13 could add a little warning about the danger of using these "replacement parts" instead of genuine Volvo OEM masts.

I really appreciate everybody's posts. You all are teaching us neophytes a great deal about caring for our Volvos!

So Rich are the one's that FCP Groton sells OK as a replacement mast? They are aftermarket part # 3533568. And so if this won't work becuase it doesn't have the ground then what, or where, can I buy just the mast to avoid buying a whole antenna as mine is just broken level with the trunk. All help is much appreciated, thanks.

Well, I figured out how to use this mast. It turned out all I needed to do was slide the metal sleeve off the old mast and slide it onto the new one. I did need to clean up the old mast a little first. Otherwise the sleeve would not slide.

I still haven't slightest clue what that plastic thingy is for though.

maybe it was protective for packaging or something? perhaps it's for use on cars that have antennas that are grounded in a different way than our antennas...
