I looked at the article in Bay 13 about changing brake pads - in my case a C70 though I'm not sure it matters - and saw how it shows to spread that pink grease liberally all over the back of the pads. Why? If the back of the pad is only in contact with the round piston, why do you smear it everywhere else that will not touch anything? Why not just put it liberallly where the contact points are?

all of that "grease" will prevent your brakes from squealing out the jerk. I applied it liberally last time I did a pad change and my brakes only squeak in the rain and that's it. Don't worry, just splooge it on there tongue.gif

I think you have a point. It's not that I can't afford the grease (it cost $17 at the dealer by the way), but if some area's only contact is thin air, I think it's ok to skip. However make sure you do put grease on the 3 metal prongs (or whatever they're called) that fit inside the piston "drum". I forgot to do that last time (and it's not in the article's pictures either).

would you rather go by what Rich has explained to us, or cheap out on the grease, have the effer squeak like crazy and have to take it all back apart? You guys are splitting hairs here.

grease it up- also, this stuff is MUCH cheaper than $17 at any autozone, pepboys, blah blah. I've used "generic" stuff, and it works fine. DON'T rip yourself off tongue.gif at least not if you don't have to.

I believe that "grease" is actually called anti-squeal compound in this application. It keeps the pads from squealing when they vibrate at a very high frequency under braking. Where the piston drum contacts the backing of the brake pad, this is where the squeal occurs.
