So since I got the car ~2K miles ago, I've heard a hum at about 40 mph. I immediately thought front wheel bearing. I would wait for warmer weather and change. Well now I am thinking it is actually the left rear brake dragging-- which pisses me off since the PO changed the rear brakes and rotors only 10K miles ago. I checked the rotor and I see a groove.

- So did my caliper fail?

- What is the best place to get a new caliper? Are there rebuild kits that are pretty good?
- What have other folks done about replacing some of the brake lines (ie, with steel braided line)?

Before you go replacing parts.... check the slide pins on the rear calipers for free movement and the correct lubricant. Clean the pins, lucbricate and you should be good to go. It could be as simple as a dragging caliper.

you see a groove in the rotor? if it's rough like a gash, I'd check to make sure the pads are good first. When I let my rear pads run down wayyy too low, I ended up w/ a horrible groove in my rear rotors, and even some sticking occasionally. Finally got off my jerk and changed out rotors/pads, lubricated, and I was all set (and still am) Also, my e-brake shoes were TOAST @ around 130k miles, so if you haven't checked them, I'd do it.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try lubing the slides. I suspect a dragging caliper, but am hoping to avoid the need to replace calipers. What is the correct lubricant?

I'm all too familiar to running the pads down and the resulting groove in the rotor. That shouldn't be the cause here. The pads and rotors were changed 10K miles ago.

Hi Mate

I just did my rear rotors and pads and found one of the calipers were 'dragging'.

I took off the pads and was able to free off the sticking caliper and put a new seal on. I suspect the brake fluid had failed and allowed corrosion in.

When was you brake fluid last changed - not bled - but fully flushed and renewed?

Mine came out like old coffee with silt in. Brakes are good now!

The car is new to me and I can't find reference to a brake fluid flush in the records. The car has 120K miles and is a 2000, so if it hasn't been done, it is long overdue. I'll have to add that to the list of things to do.

Which seal are you referring to? How hard was it to change? Is it an auto parts store part or do I need to go to the dealer?
