What's the Compression like on Your Turbo 5 Volvo?

Every time I look up a Volvo compression test, it's always the people with horrible compression (90-125). I was wondering what VS has on their cars. Hopefully better!

Edit: including mileage in a post would be nice

If I remember right 185 is considered new, and 150 is the lower end where it starts to go become concerning. I remember doing it on a 100k engine that went another 100k and I believe at the time I was mostly getting in the mid 150's. Not all gauges read the same - precision varies.

Rule of thumb is that uniformity is more important. That's because unless the car has crazy high mileage, you're not expecting all 5 cylinders to fail simultaneously. and uniformly. So if you see 140-140-140-90-140, you've got a problem, but it isn't the 140's. If you're getting uniform but low numbers, I'd probably get another gauge to confirm.

I did 2 tests so far, one test showed I was in the 155-165 area and one faulty gauge wouldn't show anything above 60 psi. So, I don't know for sure completely.

I was pleasantly surprised by 180-190 across all my cylinders at 115k. Though I think lpts would be on the higher side.

After replacing my cylinder head last summer (worn valve stem seals were leaking oil into the exhaust, no effect on combustion/compression) I tested mine with a rented gauge from Autozone, so I can't speak to the absolute accuracy of the gauge, but all 5 cylinders were between 165 and 170.

I was pretty happy with those numbers - for a motor with ~185k on it at the time to exhibit less than 5% variation across all 5 cylinders seemed pretty good to me.

What's the dry test number? Wet test is usually used to diagnosis a problem.

      Hey volvospeed!
      I have just recently installed a 20T turbo, 7 cm2 turbo exhaust housing, NA intake and exhaust cams, NA throttle body and air intake, BOSCH EV14 550 cc/min injectors, and an ARD tune. I did this about two days ago now and when I finished putting everything on the car started up fine. I let the car idle for about 5 minutes, and then took the  car for a test drive. As a side note I have swapped the automatic transmission for a manual M56H transmission, this was many months ago. But, I took the car for a test drive and when I would accelerate the car would not respond to the throttle then would backfire a few times, and would then repeat a few more times before the car lost all form of power and stalled itself out. I tried turning the car over but it would only crank not start. The next day I went over a few things to see what could be causing the issue. I pulled the spark plugs out and there was not a single hint of too much fuel. I next checked the shredder valve to be sure I was getting fuel and yes I did have fuel pressure. When I installed the cams which are both from an NA car I retarded the exhaust cam to -4 degrees and the intake cam to -6 degrees. ARD recommended, -4 exhaust and -8 intake, but I thought this a bit much. Does anyone know if the cams are the problem? The only other thing I can think of is that the tune is goofed in some way. The car did start and the car idled down to a beautiful purr but after driving it, which I only did 1/4 to 1/2 throttle (hard to remember but i know the car had to adjust parameters before I really lay into it so I did not go heavy), the car backfired then stalled and will not start again. If anyone has any info they would like to share please do.

      Hi, about to ask a question that has probably been asked a million times before. Mk11 v70 with b5244s seized the water pump and threw off the timing belt. Bent 12 valves just to make me feel better. For the price of 12 valves I've got a complete 01 s60 with b5244t3 engine. If I drop the turbo engine into v70 with the ecu will it work, or would I just be better pillaging the head for my n/a motor? S60 is auto and v70 is manual. Any advice is appreciated as this is a far cry from me dropping cummins engines into land rovers. Cheers, Gordie
