628 ECU Question

Hi All,

Hypothetical question about ECUs for 850 Turbos.

I have a 95 850 Turbo (with EGR) with the 072 ECU.  Let's say I replace my ECU with a 628 from a 96-97 850R.  As I understand it, 96-97 ECUs do not have EGR support.

I would prefer not to have to 'delete' the EGR or alter it in any way mechanically.

Will the car run OK with the EGR intact, 96-97 ECU and not throw any check engine codes?

Thanks!

Also not an expert, but also think it doesn't mater. That is, you can just swap in the 628 plug and play.

Note that while the 628 will not throw codes, it will also not operate the EGR. So you will have the hardware installed but doing nothing.

Why wouldn't you want to delete the EGR? I consider EGR a total PITA and was happy to get rid of it on my 95. Maybe you can run the 628 for a while and if you like it, then get rid of the EGR.

Better yet, move it up to m4.4!

Thanks, I really appreciate all the help on this.  Not 100% opposed to deleting EGR but honestly I haven't done my homework on how to do that yet and not totally sure what's involved - my bad.  I guess I was hoping I could leave it as is until I need to do something near there like a throttle body cleaning or PCV service.

Thanks again!

628 with no EGR will run fine with no issues. Ran my T5-R that way for 2 years

Awesome!  This is the best forum ever - you guys are amazing!  I've had the car for 12 years now, still running strong and never would have kept it running this long without this forum.

Thanks again!

Thanks, that what I thought.  I think I read somewhere that the 203 part of the number meant 4.3 but I wasn't sure.

Also, you guys are 100% right - tried out the 261 203 628 and all is well.  No CEL and all seems fine.  Very nice!

Thanks again!!

As others have already told you, the 628 ECU will run fine and there is no danger or downside to putting it in.

The bonus to removing the EGR equipment...... reduced heat in the engine bay.  The removal usually necessitates replacing the exhaust manifold (a good time to remove the earliest style manifold and put in something more modern, there are 2 improvements on the exhaust manifold, either will be fine).  You can plug the intake manifold or swap a newer one in, make sure you retain the needed number of vacuum ports, all years will vary slightly.  You will gain a bit of working space in the engine bay as a bonus.  If this operation sounds like too much work for the few horsepower it will free up, just collect the parts and do it when you need to dig deeply into the exhaust or turbo side of the car.  If you've got high mileage on the car one of the exhaust manifold gaskets will eventually fail.
