When I was replacing the plugs on my 1996 850R wagon the other day I noticed quite a bit of engine oil on top of the head. I first thought that perhaps the oil was leaking out from under the oil fill cap but eliminated that as the source. Any ideas regarding the source of this oil and how to stop it? Thanks.

How do know that for sure? Is the oil cap gasket brand new? Is your PCV system squeeky clean. If you are sure that oil is not from the oil cap it could be the PCV pipe that come out of the cylinder head, although that is highly unlikely.

On my S40 T4 I had oil on the head. Turned out it was the dipstick sealing ring. Not sure if your cars have the dipstick in a similar position?

Or maybe you spilled some last time you changed the oil

It is usually a bad seal in the oil filler cap.

Second that idea...it is possible to have it leaking from a slightly loose bolt though....
