Diff In Gearbox Failed - How To Get Repaired Cheaply? (S60 2002)

Recommended Posts

I'm in the UK and took my car for it's annual MOT test. The diff in the gearbox failed while they were road testing the car. It's a 2002 S60 2.0T, 89000 miles, manual gearbox, petrol. Obviously I want to minimise cost and a new gearbox would be very expensive. How do I minimise cost here - can the diff be replaced or repaired? (it's not something I can do). Could I find out the part number of the diff and buy a replacement from ebay (used is fine) and get someone to fit it?

Any suggestions very welcome! I don't want to ditch the car as I just spent £700 on new suspension arms and MOT!
Thanks

I feel like a used gearbox would be your best option here. I would ask the shop exactly what's wrong though before going through with buying/replacing anything. How did it fail? Did the car just stop moving?

If that's the case, maybe an axle or CV joint popped out.

Good advice above. If you need a new diff, it’s a relatively simple part to replace once the transmission is opened up. You can probably find a used one from someone who installed an aftermarket performance diff in their transmission, or you can install an aftermarket (Quaife, Wavetrac, etc) diff for a performance upgrade to your car.

If you do get the diff replaced, make sure new bearings and fresh gearbox oil get installed at the same time.

      Hey guys,
Recently my car has been shooting me with "reduced engine performance" and "engine system service required" Error codes. Yesterday I tried to replace the throttle body on the car thinking that was the problem. Once I tried driving it the acceleration was still the same very slow, and didn't go past 60 mph. So now I'm taking the other throttle body back since that obviously wasn't the problem. I'm wondering if its and issue with the turbo instead or even the air intake. Has anyone else had these issues? Please let me know.

Hi Im new to the forums and also quite new to the volvo scene, looking to upgrade my 2001 T5s suspension a bit, should i get ipd sway bars or a set of koni fsds and the like? Right now the car feels like it wallows through corners and the ride isnt even that compliant, with the amount of roll Im feeling i would assume the suspension would be softer than this. Everything else about the car is amazing, I just feel like this could be improved dramatically..
