They are physically activated. If you pull up the plastic that has the seat switches on them, behind there is a detonator, that when crushed, sets off the fuse of power that expands the side air bag.

forget the leather and go withthe new S40 style seats forgot the name of it but should be alot cheaper than leather

I remember they used to call me the fuse of power in my fraternity days...

I appreciate the information, Rich. Do you guys get hazard pay for working on seats? Although I am sure that you would have to really hit the sucker, but aren't you afraid of getting a faceful of airbag?

Is the same setup in my 2000?
