Can someone please explain who the recalls works? Does this apply only to the original owner? How can one tell or find out if thye recall has been done on their car? I see their is a recall for my 850 turbo wagon for the tranny switch and i keep getting the code for the switch and was wondering about the recalls and how they work. And if i could get stuck with a bill from the dealer afterwards. Thanks.

I just had some recall work performed on my 1998 XC70 about an hour ago. I saw mention of a recall on this list server this morning so I just called the local dealership and asked if there were any recalls on my car. They asked for the VIN and told me that indeed there was a recall on the headlight switch. Funny thing is that this part broke shortly after I purchased the car and I just used some super glue to fix the situation. I typically avoid the dealership except for buying some trivial parts (e.g. light bulbs, etc) but overall it was a positive experience. There was no cost for the work and while I'm not positive, I would think there should be no charge for any recall work.

recalls should never have a charge associated with them, regardless of owner, or anything else for that matter. do exactly what kcjhester did and call your local dealer. be prepared to give them your vin # and they will look it up for you.

Recalls are good for the life of the car.

There is no recall for a Tranny switch on an 850. There is a 76 for a shift microswitch on the shifter, but nothing for the tranny.

There are so many different recall out there that the best thing to do is have the dealer run your VIN number. When they run the VIN they will know if there is any open recalls on your car and you can schedule an appointment for the work.

Thats not a true statement, it's only true for YOUR CAR. Thats the hole point of giving the dealer your VIN, they can find out whats open for your car, not what recalls are out there, big difference.

Only dealers can do recalls, and sometimes the service writers are supprised, just means they haven't been around very long cause nothing should surprise them, it's simple the Volvo computer says you haven't had the work done, no explanation is required from you why it hasn't been done.
