My '98 V70 AWD which is new to me but has 114,000 miles on the clock, sounds like a diesel tractor when I start it up in the cold. This seems to smooth out after a few minutes of driving when the engine gets hot.
Any suggestions what may be causing this?
Could it indicate bigger problems?
Paul

I'm in the Northeast near Boston. It's been pretty cold (below freezing) but that's never bothered any of my other cars (isn't Sweden pretty cold also?). I just had the oil changed by a local independent Volvo shop: dino oil, don't know what weight they used.

hmm... We pretty much uniformally recoment Mobil 1 synthetic, and if it's really really cold (as it gets in MA) You might want to switch to 5W-30 in the winter.
as for the "dieselness" Do a "stage 0" what we call a synthetic flush, plug change, air filter change.. basically a big tune-up... did your IM diagnose any issues with your car when he had it in the shop?

Being that you stated your new to the car ...do you know if your 90K service was ever done? Sounds like it time for a tune? As for Dino oil it's fine , sounds like you don't have enough ignition to light your rich mixture on your cold start-up

I may be way off, but when I hear symptoms like that, I always like to double check that the timing belt was done in a timely manner. I know with the older cars, a stretching chain could cause similar symptoms.
I know, long shot, but may be worth looking into. That being said, the most likely culprit is plugs.
