I have never used synthtic oil, but thought I might try it since it seems to be recommended here. The car is a '99 C70 LPT with only 33,000 miles. Two quick questions:
1) How often should I change it? Seems extravagant to do it every 3,000 miles.
2) When I put it in the first time, are there any special procedures, or does it just mix with the remaining regular oil that does not fully drain?

I use full synthetic and change it every 3500 miles. Turbo cars break oil down much faster than N/A cars. Just drain as much of the old stuff as possible and pour in the new. It doesn't hurt to mix them.

I wouldn't change it until at LEAST 5,000 miles. No special procedure for first fill. Mobil 1 has proven longevity time and time again beyond 7,000 miles, even in a turbocharged application.

Best wagon ever if the damn airbox would stop vibrating and it didn't have a Ford Escort headliner.

I agree... I think 3k IS extravigant.. 5-6k is probably the furthest I would go... Secondly, make sure you buy it at Costco.. it is $25 a case there, instead of like $35-40 other places.
Lastly... watch for oil leaks, when changing from regular motor oil to synthetic...
Regular motor oil builds up and will often times clog leaks.. the synthetic comes in and clears up those clogs... sometimes causing leaks

Itīs all about how hard you rev and drive. We change oil every 5000 km in our mod cars and 15,000 km in stock cars.

5000 miles is easy with a good synthetic oil, and likely OK with a good conventional oil. The only way to know for sure is with a $20 oil analysis http://www.blackstone-labs.com/
If a problem is suspected, engine or transmission, Terry Dyson's interpretation and recommendations are well worth $35. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/dyson_analysis.html

I also have a 99 C70 LPT and my car came from the factory with Synthetic in it. The SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT comes on every 7,500 miles.
Since I consider myself an Average Driver, I just follow the Factory Recommended intervals, of Full Sythetic every 7,500 miles.
(My concious is really eased since 90% of my driving is highway driving anyways)

I have heard the "Synthetic" from the factory statement before, but it just isn't so, None of the Volvos at present come nor have any of the Volvos in the past come from the factory with synthetic oil in the Vechicle. Now many times I've seen it "Recommended" by Volvo, but they have never stepped up to the plate and payed for it in the Car.
The 7500 service interval is too long, don't care what Volvo or other car makers say. When I send a oil sample away to an independent lab and they respond with " recommend changing the oil" then the oil needs to be changed. 4-5 Kmiles is the longerst I've been able to go with any oil sample before the report came back with "change the Oil".

I had a 93 850na I got used with 155,000 miles on it. I used Mobil 1 for 25,000 miles and then it blew the rear main seal. One would wonder if Synthetic oil is good in in a higher mileage engine that was not started out from new with it.
